Thanked: 0First DE shave today...
Recently received my first 1963 slim the other day... and had my first DE shave today. I do not recall what I shaved with in the 1970s (...am in my mid-50s and can not remember, geez), but I was getting bored with the plastic throw-aways.
This forum was helpful guiding me on my first shave. I used a Gillette Super Stainless/Inoxydable blade with a setting of 2. Ending up with a very good shave by after showing, taking my time, short strokes, following the grain and a little against the grain at the end. Two little nicks that pretty much were gone after washing my face. I am pleased with the results.
I have a 1961 fatboy that should be here next week. Will see how that works for me. Once I get some technique going, I will get a sampler pack and try different bladed... but will wait for a couple of months of saving first.
Just wanted to share my first experiance with the DE and thanks for the great info on this website.

Welcome aboard...and congrats on your move to DE's...the straights may not be far behind. Being of similar age, I share your lack of memory about those early days of shaving (electrics, no doubt).

Thanked: 0Thanks Nathan,
Interesting enough, I have a couple of straight razors from my grandfather. Was just talking about that today. Figure I better get some time under my belt before going with the straight razor. Need to pull them out of the safe and see what I have.
Never took a cotton to the electric... used it once many years ago and clearly did not use it correctly as I burned my skin trying to get a close shave. I am definitely a razor/soap guy.
Do not think I really started shaving till about 1971 or 72... never really needed to until then I think. By then it seems we had the single blade throwaway type razors or a throwaway head of sorts. Might of tried using my dad's fatboy... that is possible.
Anyway, going to have a good time with the old school DE and consider the straight razor in the future.
