Default #41 a perfect Open Comb fit

After a weeks wait I finally got my Merkur #41 Open Comb and a Sampler pack.

It's kind of odd how I ended up here. I went from using an electric cheese grader on up to a Straight. Yes, the straight was fun and I learned a lot from it. Yes, I restored my great grandpa's straight to like new. But the upkeep was starting to stack and I just didn't have the cash to get the other hones to properly maintain it. It will be kept for posterity clean and polished.

Now onto the DE. The Straight taught me a lot about pressure and control which dramatically improved my shaving technique with everything else I had on hand, GEM Micromatic, BIC disposables. After doing a lot of reading and shopping around I went with the $25 Merkur and a $5 sample pack. Nothing expensive, nothing fancy but a damn good shave.

+1 on the Merkur OC razors, but if the RAD bug starts to bite, you've got to try one of the vintage Gillette OC razors (Old Type, New Improved, NEW, NEW De Luxe). Very nice!

I've already thought about doing something drastic like jumping on a Slant Bar.

Luckily, I have really good RAD repellent.

An inexpensive option that would really give you a closer shave IMHO would be a 1912 Gem SE. I have the Heavy classic Slant Bar and its not that close a shaver compared to the Gem with a fresh blade. I actually prefer the second shave with the GEM PTFE blades. At around ten dollars you shouldn't ring to many alarm bells, I hope.

    Kind regards,

    Her name is Kalyn.

It's not that she'd me or anything. I just have to save money for air fair and gas money to go see her. I'm getting good results with the Merkur 41 so I can hold off on it. What I really would like to get is one of those vintage Gillette Red Tips to play around with.

You know I'm just kidding with you, right?

The Red Tip SS is indeed a very nice razor, and one that I recommend highly. Sometimes you can snag a cheap one off eBay, or check out your local antique stores and you may get lucky.

Yeah, that's how I found out about them. They were all over ebay a few days ago. One guy had 3 or 4 of them up.
