Thanked: 0Order to try blades in sampler pack
I have a Mergress and a everything sample pack of blades ordered. Is there any particular order in which I should try the blades?

Dump them out and then left to right.
Some sample packs contain five of each
type so after working through the set once
consult your notes or memory and then
sort them by what ever measure comes
to mind. Most shaves, best three shaves,
best first shave, best second shave.
Then when you start over sort them again
but differently if you want.
If your Mergress is adjustable things are
a bit more complicated. One strategy is
to grab a two dollar no name package of
persona like blades at Wallgreens, Wallmart or some
big box outlet and play with the adjustments
limiting yourself to two shaves per blade
or something... That will get you the general
setting to work with.
My last package of Wallmart DE blades were a lot
smoother first shave blades than my Feather blades
and a lot less expensive, but that is my face not yours.
Most importantly as you learn to lather and shave
with the new razor your likes and dislikes will
change.

Generally everyone says save the Feathers for last as they are regarded as the sharpest which I agree with on the first shave but for me they seem to lose that edge quickly but ymmv.
Save the blades you don't care for and then retry the sampler in another 6 months or year and your opinion may change.
To be fair when using your Mergress resist the urge to play with the adjustment until after you find a blade that works for you that you like, introducing too many variables at one time is not good.
Also on Mergress/Progress be sure to always put the cap on the razor correct, there is a triangle and notch on one end that need to be paired on same end when putting it together.

Hi there,
I'd suggest starting with a mild blade such as a Crystal(Israeli Personna), Derby, or Red Personna. Whatever blade you decide on should be used for a few weeks, in order to develope a reference point for the next blade tried. After using a few different blades it becomes easier to determine if one is right for you and you'll know right away if the latest blade is better or worse than the last.
The idea is to use the sharpest blade that's comfortable for you, and not use one that isn't suited for your face. Some DE users will find a milder blade to be fine, while others may end up needing a sharper one.
A very well received blade is the Super Iridium, and maybe give that one a try down the road a bit. They're extremely sharp, but more forgiving than a Feather. Those are one of my favorite blades.
Start the Mergress on a low setting, and leave it there as you experiment with different blades. You want to keep as many variables the same as possible when first starting out, so you can evaluate the blades properly.
Hope that helps,
Martin

Thanked: 1195I agree with the others - try all brands randomly EXCEPT Feathers (if they are part of the sample pack). Save the Feathers until last. It was tough for me to do just that, because I knew their reputation as extrememly sharp and a user favorite.
