+1 on the feather harshness
I learned on DE, and when I tried it again, used a feather. Big mistake. Used the same razor (vintage super adjustable) with a Derby from SRD, and was quite impressed. Very smooth, no carnage. The shave lasted long enough for a work day, but about 3-4 hrs shorter than a str8.
Feathers are pretty notorious. I will try them again, sometime, but use a DE only when time doesn't permit a good str8 shave (twice since last June).

Thanked: 31Been shaing with my grandad's Gellette DE. its an open comb style head and it has a travel kit. shaved 4 times now with it in , what I hope, will show me if i
a straight will solve my ingrwn hair issues. VERY very harsh first couple times. but this time, #4, was very smooth. after 10 hrs still mostly bbs and no irritiation. Hang in there, you'll get better before u know it."The needs of the many out way the needs of the few or the one." Only if the 'few' or the 'one' are/is offering themselves (thru freewill) for the sacrifice. And not thru force from the 'many'.

Thanked: 275Thanks to everyone.
I've been using the Gillette + Feather to do clean-up work. Now, on shave #4, it's finally lost its harshness. I suppose it will get dull eventually, but it's just about right now.
I suppose a Jagger is in my future.<g>

Thanked: 70Charles,
If you're near a WalMart, pick up a 10 pack of their Wilkerson Sword blades. For a buck and change it'll give you a different, milder blade to try.

Thanked: 275After a break, I put a fresh Feather blade in the Gillette, and did one WTG pass. No problems at all! Very light touch, lighter than a straight razor.
I don't know what will happen with an ATG pass, but I'm game to try that tomorrow.
My initial trouble wasn't caused by the blade or razor -- but by the hand holding them.

when i started using feather blades in my de it was pretty rough after a few shaves i guess i learned the trick or something cause now (when i use my de) all other blades seem harsh, i love feather blades.

Thanked: 1195That seems to be the ticket!
We have to remember that even though they are called "safety razors" we are still dealing with extremely sharp and thin blades, which are very sensitive to angle and pressure. Improper technique will cause bleeding and razor burn. But with experience and practice you can achieve a BBS shave very much on par with a straight shave. Happy shaving, all!
