    ....snip....
On my face this is a clue that I have a reaction to one of
the products I used to shave with. The first shave seems
fine but I get a micro rash without any red color. Then the
next shave gets "too close" over the bumps and a little tender
The third day I get some minor bits of pink lather.

This lead me to the three day rule. A less than ideal
product for my face can wreck a shave three days down the
road so I pay attention for a full three days anytime I try
a new product. It also seems to take three days to heal...

I keep some fragrance free hypo allergenic products handy
because once I irritate my face I need a lot of caution to
    heal completely.

I change only one new thing at a time when I have my brain turned on.

I use a new product for 3+ days in a row and if it gives me
    any trouble I toss it.

Once afflicted it can help to take a post shave shower to rinse ALL the
product clear of my skin. Finish with cooler and cooler water
so my pours close up before I exit the shower. It can also
help to wait a full 20-30 min after shaving before applying
any post shave product (i.e air dry my skin).

    Watch out for alcohol....

    Summary:
Use a three day rule when evaluating products.

Agreed. It is very possibly a reaction to a product rather than a shaving technique issue, which would obviously result in some form of redness.
