Old Gillette DE Razor
I found this Gillette adjustable DE razor in an antique store and decided to go back today and buy it. It was just $8.00 not to bad for my first DE to see if I would like shaving with it. I got some blades, cleaned it up and shaved with it tonight. I was totally surprised at how easy it shaved. There was no pulling, it just glided on my face. I wondered if it was actually shaving because it was so smooth. I have been practicing with my Quatro doing WTG, XTG and ATG for a month. Now that I have used the DE razor I will never use the Quatro again. I started out with it at 1 then went up to 3 but I think a setting of 2 will be the best. Once I get comfortable with it I might invest in a new DE or make the jump to str8.

Thanked: 375Gillette Slim Adjustable?
Sounds like you got a decent deal Congrats! I haven't used my slim yet, but I have a Gillette "Fat boy" adjustable similar to the "Slim", it just has a thicker handle, and it's the smoothest DE Razor I have ever used.

Thanked: 1263Hello and welcome to SRP. Thats probably how most of us got started. I started by using my Dads old DE and loved it, then my wife bought me my Merkur Futur set, and then into the straights I went. And it just keeps going...lol. Enjoy!

Marks971,
The Gillette TTO razors are of excellent quality, and fully provide as good a shave as any modern DE razor !
Good shaving !
Have fun !
Best regards

I enjoy using my DE Fatboy also when time does not allow for a Str8.

Thanked: 1195Don't be afraid to experiment with the higher settings. Yes, it can get fairly aggressive when dialed to the max (and get also be as mild as you want), but that's the beauty of the old Gillette adjustables, and they can deliver stunning shaves.
Enjoy!

What you have there is a Gillette "Super Adjustable". It replaced the Slim in the late 1960's. A wonderful razor!

Old Gillette DE Razor
Hello, Marks971:
Yes, once you get a taste of a fine double edge razor, or a straight, the multi-blade cartridge razors will be a memory. Congratulations. Stay with it, and welcome to Straight Razor Place.
Regards,
Obie

Congrats on the razor! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
My bro-in-law had a similar experience...only I convinced him to try a de razor. Once he did, he threw his cartridge razor out and to this day only uses his DE.
Have fun experimenting with the different stiings and blades to find what's right for you!

Thanks for the encouragement! I have been using it 10 days now and playing with the settings has been an adventure to say the least. It didn't help that I bought some crappy blades to start off with but I couldn't wait to try it. I got some bad razor burn this morning OUCH! I tried a setting of 7 this morning and paid for it the rest of the day. I have been increasing the settings and see how I like it. I think it is time to back down some. I got some Wilkinson's today made in Germany at Chinamart I mean Walmart. I will try them out in the morning. The got to be better than the Winn Dixie brand made in Korea. You don't know if you like something if you don't try it, right. One of these days I will break down and order a sample pack.
