Thread: Looking for an excellent DE shaver

The Edwin Jager is a really good razor but if you're looking at using it for alot of years, spend the money and get yourself a vintage Gillette President. They are the pinnacle of DE shaving IMHO. The UK Aristocrats are pretty good as well.

Another vote for the 38C or Fat Boy. I've don't have an EJ so I can't recommend it from experience, but they are very popular in the wet shaving community.

I have 3 DE's right now.
A feather Stainless, a Gillette Fatboy and a Merkur Vision 2000.
Of those 3 I would say that the Vision is my favorite. Not because it shaves a whole lot better than the other 2, but it is big and heavy. I like that. The Fatboy is a fine shaver, but it is really small. Feels almost like a little girls toy
The Vision and the Fatboy are adjustable, a plus in my book. The Feather is not.

It really depends on your face and your blade prefs.
I tend to use the Gillette 7 O' clocks and the Feather blades. The Israeli personna's are also good in my opinion.

Those razors are the ones I would recommend. I own both as well as a couple Techs. The Techs are a bit milder but vintage Gillettes across the board give pretty consistently great shaves.

Four months ago I agonised over which DE to purchase just as you are, and after spending countless evenings reading heaps of articles I finally settled on the Edwin Jagger DE89L. I am still delighted with the choice and can certainly recommend it. I had been using cartridge razors for over 40 years so had some wet shaving experience. I am sure I had a DE in my teens, but that was a loooong time ago!

ps: The wet shaving fraternity has influenced me so much, I am now "discovering" straight razors and suffering RAD..... be warned!

Has anyone tried or know of the newer model of the EJ DE89X. From my understanding they weighted the handel more towards the head. Apparently they are only being sold by West Coast Shaving.

You cant go wrong with a vintage Gillette if Im not usuing a straight thats what I'm usuing.......

If that is true, get yourself a parker 98R. I own one, and it's a very damn heavy razor.

Does anyone have the Scoop on the Feather As-D1 Safety Razor? It is much more expensive than your average EJ or Merkur. But is it really worth the $$$ Any shavers out there who have used it for a while? Please let me know if the quality is worth the money. Thank you.

I don't know what the Feather As-D1 is? Do you mean the new Feather all stainless razor? If so, I have this razor and she's a beauty. I love it. Workmanship is impeccable. Weight and balance are perfect. This is a mild razor, however, and it takes a bit to get used to. It's expensive, yes, and the shave is not superior to that of the Edwin Jagger or some of the Merkurs and the vintage Gillettes. On the other hand, sometimes a sweet and lovely smile makes you do double take. That's the case with the Feather. It does represent a sweet and lovely smile, for me, anyway. If you can spare the change, add it to your collection.
