Default Just When Gillette Thought It Has Cornered the market

Well gents, just when Gillette thought that they have cornered the wet shaving market a VERY upscale competitor suddenly appears--Zafirro.

Here's a link to the story about this new razor: $100,000 razor will last you a decade - Technology & science - Tech and gadgets - Luxury Tech - msnbc.com

    And a photo:

This beauty, which sports sapphire blades and an iridium body, allegedly lasts for ten years. It will only set the lucky user back 100k.

    My dear friend, jhenry:

And here I was this morning, trying to decide between my 1930s Gillette Tech Fat Handle or the 1959 Gillette Fatboy. Well, I opted instead for the 1948 Aristocrat. Perhaps I should buy the Zaffiro for my birthday on June 29, but then I probably will have to sell my Rolls Royce. It's a tough choice, what?

    Regards,

    Obie

    Obie,

You made me laugh out loud...

Keep your Rolls Royce. It's more utilitarian as well as a proven asset than a Zafirro.

This thread is a duplicate topic of one started this morning entitled "Sick of honing..." in the razors section.

I suppose it belongs here in the safety razor section. Could a moderator consolidate these? That is, if you think it is needed.

    My dear jhenry:

Oh, thank you, thank you. I was getting worried about losing the Rolls. I mean I still would have had the Lamborghini and the Bentley, but neither has a bar in the back seat. I mean how low can you get?

    Well, let's see:
    Zafirro 10 years=100,000 USD
Greaves 200 years=2.50 USD (I am guessing original price)

The final question: will the value of a Zafirro increase?

I guess some people just need something to waste their money on.

Just check the calender and it is not yet April 1st.

    The iridium body is nuts.
Sapphire blades might work for some
although man made diamond is available
and the biology guys use diamond now
    for Microtomes now.

Sorry Obie but I've already bought them all up. I'm gonna have an expert change the blade from sapphire to diamond and I'm gonna have them launched into outer space for a trip around the Sun so we could really say they are from outer space. Then I'm gonna sell them for 200 grand. But for you, it will be yours for $125K.

    My dear thebigspendur:

The $125,000 price tag means I not only have to sell the Rolls, but also the tires on the Bentley. Oh, dear, dear.

All kidding aside, though, I wonder about the merits of such a razor. Better yet, is this razor for real? I suppose it's probably a prototype that will never see mass market production. What's more, will such a razor shave any better than the Edwin Jagger, Feather or Pils? Makes you wonder.

    Regards,

    Obie
