Tarkus, I keep mine at 4, sometimes at 5. I have two Fatboy and two Aristocrat razors, which I keep for my grandsons. For the most part, though, I prefer the modern razors to the Gillettes. That's why I rarely use the Fatboy. It's a fine razor, though.
    Stay well.

    Gentle Moderators:
Kindly delete one of my posts above. How I ended up with two I'll never know. Thanks.

That's because you have too large a carbon footprint Obie. Even the software on this site needs to make two for you.

Carbon footprint? My good man, half the time I limp along like a peg-legged pirate looking for his ship.

Mine is normally slammed at 9 but anywhere between 7 and 9 normally gives really good shaves.

An important tip I would offer is to really mind how much pressure you're putting on the razor. The Fatboy is a really hefty razor and you can literally let the weight of the razor do all of the work. Grip the razor as far down the handle as possible. This will keep you from unconsciously bearing down on the head of the razor.

I set mine on 5 no matter which blade I use. As indicated above by 1OldGI, let the weightr of the razor do the work. The Fatboy is not only heavy, it is top heavy towards the blade. Let the weight do the work and you'll see a big difference.

This is why this forum is so important. Thanks to you all. This thread is an important wake up call for myself. When I use a straight which is about 98% of my shaving I never ever cut myself. Its when I switch to a DE is when I do the bleeding. As per most of these posts its pretty obvious to me now that I'm applying way to much pressure with a DE. Its funny you see the words safety razor and you think the rule dont apply with it. "Safety" How could you possibly get cut with it its a Safe.
Thanks everyone for waking me up and pretty much letting me know, stop using a DE like I'm removing paint from a barn door. A light touch is needed.
    Thanks again,
    Darl (Tarkus)

Default Question for all Gillette Fatboy users

I used to keep it around 4 but was unhappy with the results, these days I'm liking it at a 7 with a Feather.

Darl! You need a bluetip! Seriously, (or not) no one talked much about different blades versus different settings?
Forgive me, I have never shaved with a DE. It just seems important. Let's say, Feather settings and Personna settings? What I am thinking is, if you put the most aggressive blade in an adjustable...and wind up turning it all the way down....Maybe a blade or razor change would benefit? Certainly experience would bring the clicks up?
    Fat Boys need to know!
    Sorry!

I don't have a Fatboy, but I have a couple of slim adjustables and one super adjustable and I keep them all around 6 or 7 I think... Love the vintage Gillette's!
