That's going to be a YMMV sort of issue. A DE razor requires a bit more skill than a cartridge razor, but once you have that skill, you might not care for the results you get with a cartridge.

I have two small moles: one on my upper lip, one on my chin. Before starting with straights, I used to shave with a Gillette Sensor 3 (like the Mach 3, but no floppy head). Just about every time I shaved with that Sensor 3, I'd nick both of those moles somewhat. I have since never nicked them with either a straight or a DE. So if I wanted to touch up with something other than a straight, my first choice would not be a cartridge,

ATG every time with a straight.

Proper prep, very sharp razor, and light touch my whiskers just slip off and so far no over travel into the proboscis stop bar. If you should slip I think the cartilage would keep you from ruining your eyebrows.
    YMMV
    It just keeps getting better

The only part of my face I do not shave ATG is right under my nose. But as my skills improve, one day I certainly will.

Keep in mind that if I shave with a straight, I solely use a straight. No "final touch" with a DE or whatever. For this moment I accept the area under my nose being not that smooth.

I do an ATG pass everywhere except under my nose. XTG works good enough there for me. As for touching up, I feel that a DE is not difficult to use, in fact it works way better than a disposable. You can be more precise than with a disposable, because you don't have that plastic hanging over on the sides. A DE is also sharper in my opinion.

i do it all the time. If your technique is good, it is not very difficult and you will get less irritation than with a cartridge. Good luck.

I never do ATG under my nose.I don't want my beak falling off into the sink like daffy ducks does when it falls off his face. But then he doesn't shave

I go ATG under the nose on the final pass using little pressure, otherwise there will be blood.
