Thread: Blade change frequency

I was thinking about this.

Is there a good reason not to have a fresh blade in for every shave? Besides the obvious cost of the replacement.

I'm asking because I always feel better or more confident with a fresh blade.

I change my blade every shave, but I have a very tough beard. A lot of guys go 3 or even 7 days on a blade, so it varies a lot from person to person. The only real reason not to change blades daily is cost, and blades are cheap enough ( for most of them) that that isn't a huge deal.

None that i can think of unless some of the blades actually get smoother on the second or third shave.
Do what is best for you and gives you the best results.

Personally, I find that I get better shaves until about shave 4 or 5. I never (almost) go less than 3 or more than 5. I use a Feather blade.

I usually go about 5 shaves before changing blades. But if a blade is still working well, and is clean cutting, I would let it go for another shave or two.

Varies with the blade and razor but in general I get 3-4 shaves per blade.

The first brand i tryed seemed to give me 3 shaves for a while.
then i could only get one good shave.

This is one of those YMMV situations.

When you shave, be observant. Notice how the blade feels against your skin, slicing through your stubble. With each successive shave, does your shave experience improve or get worse?

I don't keep track of how many times I've used a blade. I do my best to be consistent with my beard prep, so any deterioration in my shave experience will be due to the blade. So during a shave when I first start to notice my blade is "pulling" at my stubble more than it did during my previous shave, that's when I stop and change my blade. The immediate feedback I get from my new blade confirms that I changed my blade at the right time.

But if using a new blade with every shave makes you feel good about yourself, there's no need to change. Feeling good about yourself with regard to shaving is SRP's raison d'etre.

I tend to go for about 3 days between changes of the blades. Although I do like a fresh blade I don't see the point of a change every shave. The thing I look for is pulling and discomfort, that normally means its time to change the blade.

I too find that most blades are better after the first shave. Its like using a straight after honing without stropping first.
