    Default The right DE

I have my parker shavette and have been learning with it. I also want to get a DE to try out but I am having trouble picking one out. There are things like open comb, closed comb, slant edge, adjustable etc to chose from. One I really like the look of is the Dreadnought Spartan. So my question is what should I start out with not necessarily brand but what type?

I'm going to step into quicksand
    and offer a wobbly definition
    of these types of DE's.

Closed Comb - I would describe as
a typical type of DE we are most
familiar with. Most likely suited for
    most shavers

Open Comb - These have those little
prongs that stick out under the blade.
More aggressive. Cooler and more Klingon
like. Suppose to work better on tougher
beards or those with a few days growth.

Slant - A closed comb but the edges of the
blade are at a steeper angel. More aggressive
than the closed comb but without those prong thingies
that no doubt will impress the ladies.

Adjustable - Closed comb but with the twist of
a knob the gap of comb open or closes. This
way you can adjust the setting to where it
    best suits you.

The Spartan looks like it would be a very
    good razor.

I hope more knowledgeable member step
    in and correct my errors.

Thanks for the help I watched a couple vids on youtube on the subject showing all the different styles. I think a closed comb nonadjustable like the spartan is in my future. There are many out there to chose from that can be had for less but I just really like the way the spartan looks more than most. Ikon makes a nonadjustable that has both open and closed comb. I shave at least 5 days a week and here soon will have to shave 7 days a week. I am leaning more toward a closed comb because of that. Also my face tends to get chewed up rather easily so something genital but can still do a good 1 or two pass shave is what I am looking for.

If you like the Spartan then go for
it - nothing else will satisfy you.

I am pretty sure that the Dreadnought Spartan is a head that is made by Edwin Jagger if not the whole razor. I have read that they admit to some components being made by EJ and there are only 3 components to this razor. EJ used to use a Merkur head for thier products but I understand that they make thier own now.

All in all Terry is right, go for it. Edwin Jagger does make a very fine razor.

The Dreadnought cream is rebranded (for America) Bluebeard's Revenge I am told. I had some of the original and it is a good cream, but is supposed to reduce hair growth over time when you use it. Now I don't know about you, but I want to grow my beard so that I can shave it off!

That may be kind of difficult to find.

I have a small tin on the cream and it smells really good though I never intended to buy more it was a free sample. I am going to look into those a little more if they look close enough I will go with a EJ, though some of the handles are kind of ugly to me.

As long as it dose not feel like a brick being drug across my face like my shavette feels now I will be happy.

The heads do look remarkably similar, and I did a quick search and found some more appealing looking EJ razors.

Remember to stretch the skin and
use a light touch -simply allow the
razor to glide down (or up or across)
    your face.

Once you get a DE in your hand you
will abandon the shavette - most
    likely forever.

You might want to consider buying a
    sampler pak of DE blades.
