Thanked: 0Has anyone tried stopping their blade to see if it will last longer. My first stop I bought was actually for the purpose of making the disposable razors last longer. I just started using the replaceable straight and thought it might work on a strop. Thoughts????

Thanked: 39Money would have to be pretty tight to make me consider trying to hone DE blades. With this said, I did try a thin film of t-cut on a piece of glass once and it worked. For the life of my, I can't recall why I had cause to do this but I remember it being succesfulm

I have a Dovo shavette that came with Dovo long blades and a few Merkur short ones. The short ones were better for getting the hard spots on the neck, and seemed to last longer. The long Dovo ones are not the greatest.
Day one was the worst, so sharp any little twitch or nudge was a nic or cut. 5 or 6 one pass shaves was the end of them. At least towards the end of it's life it would just pull and tug more and not shave as close, but it was the scalpel beginning that was hardest to control.
Now I use a straight and it's not as sharp but much more forgiving. It's a more consistent edge to shave with. A bad strop session can dull it a bit but otherwise it's about the same each day.

Thanked: 8On my SR1: the life of the half-DE blades doesn't seem to correlate to life I see with my DE razor.
On sharper blades, like Feather, I get about equal (2+ good shaves per side). On less-sharp blades, like 7 o'clock SS, I get one decent shave per side whereas in my DE razor I could get 5+.
I suspect it's related to pressure: with a DE razor I can easily add pressure to compensate for a duller blade whlie on the straight it results, more often, in injury. A sharper blade leaves me more comfortable with less pressure.

Thanked: 36I get 2 good shaves and one ok shave from half a blade. I've tried using it a fourth time and I end up with a lot of irritation. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of blade I use either, but I haven't tried that many. Derby blades work great for me, they're sharp but quite forgiving of mistakes. I tried wilkinson and generally got bbs with a little bleeding. Laser blades gave me an ok shave but I just couldn't get my chin smoothe. No irritation at all though, so not all bad. Derby are the best of both worlds for me in a shavettte.

It's a subjective question, to my opinion it's a DE blade so it's all the same factors. Some blade run longer some shorter some are harsh some are good, me i dont push my blade to far. If the shave is not good change the blade. My # is around 4 to 7 not more then that. Gino

I used a shavette before i switched to a s/r. I could get 4 shaves on a blade. Now my face is not as sensative as others when I felt it tug a little i knew it was time to switch out. That is the beauty of the straight keep it maintained and you don't have to worry about switching blades. Have a good one.

I only use a blade once, as I've found that trying to get any more shaves out of it just irritate's me.
I use the SS Feather razors for a while & found irritation after 2Shave's so they where passed on to my stepson.
I now use mainly Sanguine shavettes & to date Derby and Shark blades.
