Suggestions on shavette
Hi,
Im using mostly straight razors for my shaving and have experienced a rather close and nice shave using Vanta Inter Lama shavette!
Im looking for suggestions for other shavettes that use full blade cartrige instead of half or specialy designed ones!
The reason im thinking of buying one is because i think it could be useful substitute for a straight wehn going on a trip for a few days!Have a nice day!

Thanked: 8Do you not like to split the DE blades in half?

babarog,
I highly recommend the Feather Artist Club DX straight razor with replaceable blades. The razor is well built and uses full blades. I have always scratched my head at the idea of breaking double edge razor blades in half for use in the so-called shavette razors. The Feather is pricey, but its quality speaks for itself.

Yes, the DX is pricey, but does shave really nice.....
Closest no-sharpen substitute for a straight razor that I have found so far.
Unlike the Dovo Shavette, Feather DX weight and balance are similar to a straight razor.
I had bought my first DX initially purely for traveling.
Now I have three (one each for my carry-on, suitcase and home.)
Go, figure; RAD in action....
Today, for the first time, airport security got curious what I had in my carry-on bag.
(Mind you, I was the captain. :-) )
As I had previously removed the blade, it was not a problem and they let me move on with my DX.
But wouldn't I hate to loose that Feather DX investment to airport security one day...
To clarify Obie's "uses full blades" statement:
Yes, the AC system uses full Feather AC blades, but for those not familiar with the Feather AC, these are proprietary blades vaguely similar to (but not interchangeable with) the Personna Hair Shaper blades that can be fitted in the Dovo Shavette.
The trade-off:
The initial investment for a Feather DX is about 4x the investment for a Dovo Shavette.
The light-weight Shavette does not give the illusion of being a straight, but the end-result (in my case using Dovo proprietary Shavette or Personna Hair Shaper Blades) can be a respectable shave.
So, in the end,
would I trade a ($200 investment) Feather DX for a Dovo Shavette?
Hell, no!
But would I consider a ($35 investement) Dovo Shavette for travel by air where overzealous airport security might confiscate my Shavette (even without blades)?
Hell, yes!Last edited by beluga; 08-25-2014 at 08:20 PM.

Thanked: 171I have the 2013 R101 (a R41 with black handle) and consider shaves with it the closest DE thing to straight shaves.
I use this razor with Feather or Astra blades and find its much-touted aggressiveness largely exaggerated.
The razor demands attention, but gives me long-lasting, close, comfortable shaves without bloodletting.
If you want to reach for a DE razor, what more can you want?

The best way to try the Feather (type) system on a budget would be the CJB 101.
A Korean clone of the Feather RG fixed.
They make a folding version, it has what has to be the worst set of scales on the planet (a single piece of bent sheet metal)
If you don't like the fixed, under the material on the fixed handle there is a hole for a pivot pin - make a set of scales...
PM me if you are interested and can't find one.
Much better than the DE shavette IMHO...

Hi Guys.
I used a Dovo Shavette for a year before purchasing my first straight and can honestly say while It doesnt have the weight of a genuine straight it will still teach you the basic technique on straight shaving and still give you a gd shave also, plus I used mine constantly while travelling which was frequent ( working abroad ) and still would use it when travelling. For the £ it's a great little razor that taught me the basics and would recommend to anyone thinking about straight shaving thats not too sure and doesnt want to invest in a decent straight razor to start with. Just my two cents.

I bought the Feather SS for travel. It's a great system. Not as fun as a straight, but better than a DE. I have a Parker that uses a half DE and didn't like it. The Feather is WAY closer to an actual straight.
