Thread: Antiga Barbearia de Bairro Shavette

I'm new to the forum and also to using a shavette.

I've been using a DE Safety razor for about 18 months now and it's been great. I wished I'd started years ago. It's just as close as a shave with a disposable razor but my skin feels much better and I save heaps to boot.

I've just bought a Parker SRB Shavette and am trying it out with a Derby blade. I'm still new to shavettes and the technique for shaving so find it hard to get a close shave all over: especially around the chin and mouth, and also find I have a lot of burn. I'll keep practicing to see how it goes.

I was also thinking that, if I decide to stick with it, I'd upgrade my shavette. I've seen a very nice looking one with a wooden handle from Antiga Barbearia de Bairro. Does anyone have any experience with this and would they recommend it?

Any tips for getting a closer shave without getting too many cuts would also be appreciated.

The problem is your expecting great results in just a short period of time, read over everything you can in the beginners section, also just shave one area till your comfortable, then move on. Plus the blade your using may be the problem too. Throwing money won't get you a better shave. Technique and prep is what's stopping you right now.

Time will get you there. Your angle is too steep and is scraping instead of cutting, you don't mention what your using for soap, could be some of the issue.

Also if your only getting as good a shave with a DE as a disposable then you need to learn it better, with my DE and a feather blade I can match my straights.

Also if your not opposed to spend money on quality, try a Feather straight, they come in a couple different models but with feather blades they are a treat,

Just slow down, read more, put your location in your profile so you might get some local help. To get this kind of shaving down you need experience, that don't come from buying another razor, but. I'll say the proper equipment does make a difference.

I was probably mashing a few things in the same post so I should probably clarify.

Yes the DE shave is great probably better than a disposable. I need to use less passes and my skin feels much better afterwards so no complaints there. I'm trying out different blades at present. I have been using Derbys which have been fine. My skin is sensitive so I find the Feathers harsh. I'm currently using Bolanzo Superino which are great.

Thanks for the tip about the angle. I think you could be right that I'm using a too steep angle. The soap I'm using is from Bluebeards Revenge which I've found produces a great lather for my DE shaving. The blade is a Derby.

I certainly will stick at it. I do enjoy the technique of using a straight razor and don't give in easily!

The query about the Antiga Barbearia de Bairro shavette was not to see if it helps with getting a better shave more that it looks a lovely bit of kit and if I stick with using a shavette it looks like a nice one to be using. I bought the Parker as a try out so once I'm comfortable it's the way to go for me I plan to upgrade to something for the long term. I'll also check out the Feather.

I ordered one. Shipping to Germany was very quick, but I wasn't very satisfied with the product itself.
The service is excellent!

general design failure:
The first 1/5 of the razor blade touches the handle when closed.

first shavette:
The blade holder wasn't centred correctly.

Replacement was posted before I sent it back.

The replacement shavette had a problem with the blade holder itself.
It was nearly impossible to open the holder. After getting it open, I noticed that the metal was bent.

Anyway, the took everything back with out a hassle. I got all my money back + all shipping costs.

You get what you pay for, just get a Feather and be done with it. Tc

100 % with shavettes is angle. You will either dig into your face or have razor burn you wont soon forget. I was lucky and I can get away with the cheap blades I have never even used expensive ones. I believe my shavette only run about $10, prep, angle and pressure. Also as TC mentioned do one area of your face until you can do that comfortably then move on don't be to proud to go to your DE for touch ups or to finish the job. There are times I just can not get a certain spot usually on my neck so I grab a DE take care of it and go on. Good luck and you will get it in no time at all.

Antiga Shavette is my current tool right now. I went from Parker SRX which also an amazing one because of its weight.

Honestly. Antiga is the best shavette. Here's why:

1.It's beautiful.
2.premium quality but cheap price.
3.accepts both half DE blades and freaking Feather long blades! I use super pro blades on mine.
4.excellent blade exposure, makes it easier to get BBS compared to other shavettes.

The only downside for this shavette is the blade loading mechanism, but it becomes easy and natural as you get used to it.

Before buying this shavette, my options were this and Feather AC SS. But
when I found out that this thing can use the popular Feather long blades, I didn't see any more reason to go with Feather AC SS. I am glad that I saved myself some money.

Feather is only limited to their own brand of blades, while Antiga will accept anything but Full DE blades. It can use anything from half DE blades to injector blades.

I don't really get all the hype for FeatheAC/DX. It's only the blades that makes em great.

I am shocked that Antiga still hasn't gain a popularity despite its functionality and price tag. But I am not surprised, since everyone just recommends Feather left and right without doing a research.

The Antiga is a great shavette for many reason, the brazilian jatoba wood handle, the solid SS blade holder, its versatility (the capability to use the Feather artist club style blades surely makes it a winner).
Control quality though is very bad, the vast majority presents important flaws regarding the blade holder (not centering, scratched or bent metal). Then the famous design flaw that makes loading blades quite annoying.

I personally love mine and I believe it's the best shavette money can buy in the $10-$50 range (I've tried Parker, Universal, Sanguine, Dovo).

Then come the Feathers, but that's another game, another sport, another planet quality wise. I can see why people greatly prefer those japanese jewels despite the step price tag.
