Thanked: 0Feather Artist Club questions
I'm thinking of getting a Feather SS.
1. Is the folding handle or the kamisori-style handle easier to use? It seems to me that having the folding handle sticking out would be clumsy and also block my view.
2. Does anyone other than Feather or Kai make blades for these? If so, where can I get them?
Thanks!

Welcome to SRP. I've never shaved with a Feather artist club, but I use Feather pro blades in my single edge Mongoose and they are great. I've shaved with many a straight and vastly prefer the folding razor to a kamisori style. The handle can fold, be held straight out, or somewhere in between. I think it is an advantage but ........ YMMV (your mileage may vary)
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2I have been using the Feather Artist with a folding handle and love it. It is pretty much the best of both worlds since can't seem to get my real straights shaving sharp. There are different blades so you will have to experiment with which blade works best for your beard, but really a super razor!! And no, I am pretty sure they are proprietary blades for their razors. I haven't found anything else that will work with them.

Thanked: 7Not to throw a wrench in your thoughts. Have you checked out the Irving Barber Co IBC. I decided to go for that one and I love it!

Thanked: 0I'm pretty set on the Feather SS. It's dropped down to affordable, and I know Feather doesn't make bad stuff.
Also, thanks for the responses, everyone.

I have the Kami-Style SS. I really like it - especially when I am cramped for time. I also have a Kami and of course, I also shave with traditional straights as well.
I really enjoy the Kami-Style SS. I think I might prefer it over a folding handle, but that opinion can change at any given moment. If you haven't shaved with a traditional straight, I would say go Kami-style - I think it's easier to get used to.
The Feather Blades are great - they don't seemingly last as long for me as they do for some others. But who cares lol? I'm so happy with them, I've never tried another.
If you have shaved with a traditional straight, or if you are reading how to shave with a traditional straight, all I can say is close up your angle of attack. That's to say, keep the spine closer to your face and you'll be rewarded with a much smoother shave. Whatever you do, make sure you partake in wet shaving. It makes it a WAY better experience! Well, at least it does for me.
Good luck! The SS is a great toy!David

It certainly can be! It's not a big deal for me really. What is though, and as much as I hate to say it, the thing I really miss about the folding handle is putting the thing away. Man, you really have to think about it or risk dinging the blade all the time.
I have a little picture stand on my sink now that I rest it on lol.David

I had the folder and gave it away when I got the Kami style razor. I then also bought the CJB and the Sam Seong kami styles
All work well and the Feather is the best made though none will disappoint you for their prices.
Kai makes another and they seem to be well regarded.

I have the Kami style SS and get great shaves with the Feather Super Pro blade. I've tried all of the Feather and Kai blades and prefer the Super Pro. Have fun!

Thanked: 21I have the kamisori-style with Pro Blades. Never had a closer shave in my life. I also have straights, none of which have been professionally honed. I am trying to hone them on my own, and am still trying to get any of them to shave as close as my feather. Using a King 1 k bevel setter and Norton 4/8.
the pro blades are wicked sharp. Crazy sharp. But a bbs shave every time, especially on shaves 2-5 IMO. Straights are still tugging, but the feather is super comfortable with the pro blades. Just my 2 cents...
Just be sure to get the plastic cover for your feather, and wipe it down after every shave. You really don't want anything that sharp laying around, especially if you have kids like me!
