Thanks Richard ... as you see our friend is Parisian, so he speaks and read french rather well. We are on the same french forum.
French uses often the same word for different meanings
Salon is living room for a private house, but also another room in some old houses, used only to recieve someone with no dinner. Or just the part of the living room with the couches and armchairs
It means exhibition when used in "salon de l'auto, salon de l'agriculture"
"Salon de coiffure" is just the hairdresser working room, and 'salon de beauté' is a beauty salon.
