Default How To Clean Feather Artist Club Razors?

Guys who use Feather Artist Club Razors, how do you clean them?

    1. Do you just let them air dry after every shave? (The blade stays in throughout - Maybe a week? ) Will this cause rust issues?
    2. Do you disassemble it, take the blade out and then let it air dry? Thus messing around with the mechanism every-time? Will this affect its lifetime?

    What is the recommended method?

The RG is plated brass and the SS and DX are stainless steel, so corrosion is not a big problem at all. I pull the blade out maybe once every few weeks, and only disassemble for more thorough cleaning every 5-10 blade changes. Doesn't seem to need even that much.

The mechanism is a pivot and a spring...the pivot isn't in danger of being worn out, and the spring seems robust and could be adjusted if it weakened (hasn't happened to mine in the several years I've owned it).

The big issue with the Feathers is leaving the blade in there, which most of us do. That is what causes the corrosion. Even though you may have a stainless steel housing the blade is not and it will start to corrode quickly in that housing environment. This will stain onto the housing and you, when opening it, can sometimes be open to a 'surprise'. Ideally rinse and dry the whole thing out after every use (or at least blade change). I sometimes put some razor oil in there and that helps. Occasionally you will want to do a thorough cleaning with an old toothbrush and your favorite polish/cleaner.

It's really not too different than what you face with a DE razor.

I give mine a dunk in alcohol with the blade installed. Dry it off and put it away later in the day.

I haven't seen any rust on the CJB, SS or Dx.

I leave the blade in until its dead unless I change it from one razor to the next, which doesn't happen often.

On all my razors I take them apart, clean under hot water, wipe them off and let them thoroughly dry and reassemble. I clean the blades and keep them in a blade case until I use them again. I learned this the hard way when I was in the army in 68 at Ft. Bragg and got a terrible infection on my face. A special forces medic told me how much bacteria is on a razor that is not field stripped, cleaned and dried. How right he was. Almost 50 years later I field strip all my razors, no matter DE, SE, Shavette or Straight. I also bath them in disinfectant once a month.
