Thanked: 375Beard care?
Have a question for you all.
I've recently had to shave my Goatee off for work (on the Fire brigade). Yearly I have to have a "Fit test" to see if my SCBA fits and seals properly, hence the shave.
So usually I'll sport a full on beard for a month or so after (grey hair check). and it accurred to me, is there any care for a beard other than typical washing, trimming, shaping and cleanup of strays?
For those that grow a beard, How do you all tame this beast and keep it neat?
Just like I was handed a razor to shave at 14 yrs old and was just told "careful don't cut yourself" no one ever suggested to me on how to go about techniquer or caring for a beard. Sounds silly, but I'm guessing just like shaving there are grooming techniques I could learn. And then again, I could just be reaching for something else to talk about besides shaving.....HahaCHRIS

My wife put me on to coconut butter, saying it does great things for hair health. It's very oily tho. Supposed to put it on a little before your shower & just wash it off. Don't know many more details but I'm giving it a go

Thanked: 375Thanks, I'll look into the benifits of Coconut butter. I think my wife has some acutally
Edit: Well I just read up on some of the benefits, This stuff is suppose to be great for your hair, skin, heart, and the list goes on! Sounds like natures cure all. May have to find some that's not all jacked up with added chemicals.Last edited by Trimmy72; 07-13-2013 at 07:24 AM.

Thanked: 1195I occasionally wear a beard as well, usually during a good old Canadian Winter.
Once my whiskers are long enough to be considered a beard I use shampoo on my face (in the shower, of course) to keep it clean. I don't like using conditioner in my beard because the wax makes my skin feel greasy afterwards and clogs pores, causing acne. Many hair care sites recommend to avoid washing your beard with shampoo every day, as it strips the hairs of natural oils.
Other than that I use a beard trimmer to keep the lines neat and to tame the unsightly stragglers.

If you hone your own straight razors, and use a "popping hair" test for sharpness,
then you could use your razor to shape your beard and/or pick off strays, while at
the same time saving your arm/leg hair.

Thanked: 375All right so from what I'm hearing, there really isn't anything other than maybe coconut butter, that I haven't done, did or tried. Thanks Gentlmen!
New clippers are on my list to get, or beard trimmer. And some stache wax, I have some hairs that defy gravity pr0bably a bad purchase as I really don't like my stache. I usually stick with just a goateeCHRIS

Thanked: 2I have been using Blue Beards Beard Wash for about 2 months now and it works really good. Wash you face with a good natural soap, then wash with this stuff. It smells like limes, but some people say it smells like pine sol. IMO, it smells good. There is also a product called Wild Man Beard Wash. It's ok. For softening, I use Wicked Cookie Duster beard wax remover by Petal Pusher Fancies. A couple of drops is plenty. Rub it in after a shower. And finally, my Maxterpiece micro straight razor to clean up the lines. I got so into shaving with a straight, I figured, I got it down, so now it's time to grow a beard so I can slay the wiskers later with one of my straights!
