    Default Face irritation

Howdy fellers. Just had my first shave with my new Dovo's 5/8 best. Great shave, but I'm getting little bumps on my cheeks. I've used Mach 3 for ages and never had that problem. Could it be the soap?

Most likely it's just the transition, your skin needs to adjust for a while. Also, when starting out with a straight your technique will not be perfect (normal, count on 6 months- 1 year of very regular use to really become good at it- and you might press down too hard or try too many passes or any of various other things. I assume, btw, that your razor is shave-ready, which in practice means that it's been honed by an expert, out of the box they rarely if ever are truly shave-ready.

Take it easy, read up on some of the beginner threads, use a good post-shave cream and don't try to achieve that baby smooth shave from day 1. It's worth the time and effort you'll put in, really, but the learning curve is steep.

Could be a number of things for sure. As said so well by xenophon. Sharp razor is the first must. Light pressure will help you learn to feel the hairs being cut and keep the razor off the skin. It may not take that long to keep from getting bumps though. BBS yes, great shave no. Don't hop around to much or add things to your routine until you can at least get a good shave. After my 2nd week I actually noticed how great my face felt after shaving. after a month I started playing around with other changes. Razors ,soaps, etc. Some soaps may irritate your skin. I suspect it is the sharpness and/or pressure thing. Let the bumps subside before you use a straight again if they don't go away before you need 1.

I did use the Dovo out of the box. Will give it a proper strop next time. All good advice from Xenophon and 10 Pups. I love the whole SR process. Thanks again guys.

So it is only factory sharp ? If so I hear it could be a lot better. If you bought it from somebody that uses one and hones then you can look directly at technique .

Better as in how? Stroped or honed?

Honed. I have never had a new razor but the general consensus is they are not as sharp as a pro honed razor. Stropping may help but probably not. That is another thing that is as important to learn as the actual shave. Read up on that too ! There is a lot to learn but you have started so there is no turning back until your psychiatrist says too.

The literature says it has been "professionally honed". Lots to learn and nothing but time to burn.

Then maybe it has. If the hairs cut clean without pulling then look to use less pressure. You may also look at angle. start with the blade against your face and no more than 2 widths of the spine away at the top. To much angle is scrapping not shaving. I am just guessing and your best bet is to watch you tubes or go to the library in the beginning section of the site and read about technique. Your first shave. You will figure it out and it will get better. Like you asked it could be the soap. Do you have sensitive skin ?
