I am 21 now, when I wanted to start with a DE when I was 20, my parents told me I would cut myself etc... They where against it, anyway went out and bought one. Half year later I bought a straight. But one guy even told me I couldn't have a straight since those things are weapons. Another just said ok, and my parents do not seem to care anymore. When I want to talk with my dad about it he wants to know nothing of it.

I started traditional wetshaving 3 1/2 years ago as a practical matter. 40 years is long enough to try to get closeness and comfort out of an electric or multiblade razor that's commonly sold in stores. The safety razor solved my long-standing problems, but I was drawn by the lure of the straight and learned how to use it. So my point to anyone contemplating switching their shaving method to an old fashioned method is, (1) are your current methods doing the job to your satisfaction, and (2) do you want to do this?

For me, the decision to switch was a better reason than morbid curiousity. People declare all the time that they like the modern multiblade razor and if they do that's fine. My face was irritated all the time with the Fusion and its many predecessors so I needed an alternative. Other people like the Fusion-style razor but think the price is too high. For them the solution is to go to YouTube and watch videos on how to extend the life of them, in one case I found, to 22 months. The thing you have to be careful about if you attempt to save money by buying name-brand multiblades on places like ebay is to know that some knock-offs with shoddy workmanship have been known to be sold as the real thing.

This site isn't a "club of manhood" for me where "real men" groom themselves in one particular way. Do what works for you. And no matter what you choose, you really need to do your best to ensure that you're buying the real deal and not some imitation that can potentially injure you.

I'm on DE shaving until I get my first straight delivered and in shape- so far, the two main reactions I have gotten when I talked about making the change were either a shocked "OMG you're insane- those things kill people!" to "Hey, that's cool, I want to watch." I suspect the second reaction may be more of a morbid curiosity in seeing how well I can avert disaster with a naked blade at my throat; my friends are probably already taking bets on how long it will be before I go to the Emergency Room for cutting myself !

They think I am strange but they always thought that. I did get my bro in law to start using a shavette.

Shit you had me at the damn cost of multiblade razors. ill pay for all my equipment in 6 months and it'll hopefully last years.

You know what's funny about this? I shaved in the trucker's lounge again a little while ago and continue to get comments. One guy had a beard that was real long and he says he hasn't been clean shaving since leaving the military in 1975, and another said, "Straight shaving, that's a skill." But the part that surprises them the most is when I tell that them the discomfort and poor shaves from the Fusion is what drove me to it. That's a weird thing to say to someone in mainstream.
