My dads reaction - 'Well, my dad didn't show me how to shave, so I only use cartridges"... and "Cor, are they still using those?" after showing him some straight razors in the SOTD threads.

My (now ex) gf's reaction - "But you'll hurt yourself". How I laughed at this... until I nicked my throat. Oops. Her son's reaction - "F*ck that!" Ok, that was with my DE razors, but I guess it'd be the same for straight razors.

You know, all these people who're convinced you'll somehow decapitate yourself by shaving with a straight: they're the best argument I can think of for shaving with straights. There are way too many pathetic ninnies in the world today. Shaving with a straight is one small way to take a stand against the slow decline of Western civilization. Or at least that's going to be my story from now on.

Never understood the head removal argument with cut-throats...I mean, I stop doing something at the first sign of pain or blood, and I think there would be a lot of pain and blood even before I managed to remove my head...

You know what's funny about this? I shaved in the trucker's lounge again a little while ago and continue to get comments. One guy had a beard that was real long and he says he hasn't been clean shaving since leaving the military in 1975, and another said, "Straight shaving, that's a skill." But the part that surprises them the most is when I tell that them the discomfort and poor shaves from the Fusion is what drove me to it. That's a weird thing to say to someone in mainstream.

The last couple of generations have never handled a blade not encased in some material so I guess the idea of handling a DE or SE blade is crazy to some.

My ex-wife thinks straight shaving is dangerous. And it probably is. So is taking a walk or driving to work. Or eating food you haven't supervised from origin until it goes down the hatch.

    My favorite.

    "What? why? Seems dangerous."

Me. " Yep, straight or safety. Why not, best shaves ever. Dangerous, seriously, yes, it can be but you learn fast when it's you face."

Shaving is dangerous. A blade and/or brush, unclean or unsterilised etc, and a momentary lapse of concentration...

Most people think Im nuts, I mean why go thru it just to shave, but when they hear the reasons, somehow they agree that shaving with a cart is either too expensive, uncomfortable, ingrowns etc. And then they tell me if I lend them a razor strop, brush soap etc, they will try it. I tell them if you want to learn it, put some skin in the game and buy these..... No converts lately. But Im shaving this way because its more comfortable and closer and more comfortable, haha. I do it for me, I would help anybody out and I have.

The best reaction I got was from my barber. Once I told him that I was buying some stones, strops, razors, etc. his eyes just lit up! He's an old Italian gentleman from a family of barbers. He says he misses the days of straight razor shaving customers. State law prohibits that now and he has to use the disposables. Only one customer gets a full shave these days on a regular basis.

I did actually meet someone else who uses a straight razor but not for shaving his face. He trims the calluses on the knuckle of his thumb! He's a very good bowler and owns his own pro shop. I tried to convince him to try it but no luck yet. Maybe try it by a professional and you will be rubbing your face all day.
