At the Barber today...
So was at the barber this morning for a haircut...if what I have left could actually be called a, "hair-cut".
As I said to his son, "You have a bad hair day, I just have no-hair days!"
So, as I said, his son is there, Sam, the old Italian barber who I've gone to for years is on vacation.
So, of course we get to talking straight razors, the son doesn't really know how to shave with one, just uses a Parker for the back of the neck. The father has a display with some really nice razors he WILL NOT sell to me, including a beautiful old Boker, and a pristine DD Goldedge. Sam say's he always knew one day they'd be worth something, he's got approx 20 in a display case, including some old hones, a Rolls Razor, some brushes, and some really nice razors, one is very old with bone scales, can't figure out what it is.
So we're chatting away, the son is asking me questions, and he tells me his Dad is teaching him how to shave with a straight, and that he just picked up a beautiful new razor he's going to learn on.
I said, really, sounds like a nice blade!?! He say's hold on, he'll grab it from downstairs. So he brings it up, it's in a nice box, the razor is in a velvet bag, I'm like, sheesh, this should be nice. So he hands it to me, I open it up and it's.....
....a Kreigar!!!
It broke my heart, but I had to tell him, that those are referred to as razor shaped objects, it won't hold an edge, and it's basically not usable for his purpose. He was disappointed, but then, upon reflection, said that for $20, he shouldn't be surprised.
Makes you wonder, how much money these people are making selling these things...
Cheers!

"a Kreigar!!!"
(Whispering) The horror. The horror.
The last time I went to the barber I asked about his shavette. When I told the barber I used a straight, he and a retired barber friend, became excited. The barber got out his old Dovo and let me have a look. The retired barber said he still had his Wade and Butcher. I think I will bring my Aust when I go to get a haircut tomorrow. this is the first barber that I have talked about shaving with who was actually interested.

Being in the military, Barber Shop is really in name only, even for the places near post.
Five/ten minute clipper job with a vacuum on it, followed by scissors that are 'clicked' 20 times for each actual cut.
Forget even mentioning a REAL Barber Shop Shave.
Pure production line barbering.
Consider yourself lucky to be able to talk to a barber with experience...Malo periculosam libertatem quam quietum servitium
