The spectacle(s) of it all
I read an interesting comment on Razor Grip thread about a problem with glasses getting in the way. Now, I know some of us, young and fit though we are, can't ALL have 20/20 vision, right? So what do people do?
The reach over has always been a total pain for me to do because of my glasses. Well last night I put my contacts in and the shave went a whole lot better. OK, I'm still very new to this so the improvement is likely to be the steep learning curve, and maybe using Colleen's shave cream had something to do with it (beats the hell out of soap). But I can't help wondering whether the absence of glasses makes for a closer shave for a noob.
Any tips for those of us with glasses please?

Thanked: 346The only area where glasses cause me trouble are the high cheeks underneath the glasses - those I hit with sideways passes by sliding the tip of the razor underneath them. The temple area never bothered me, nor the reach-over pull - I put my forefinger on the frame to hold them in place and pull up with the other fingers

Thanked: 0Other than my glasses going somewhat askew when I start shaving down from the temples/ear area I have no problems. I think I'd have many MORE problems if I were to take the glasses off and shave!
But my spectacles are somewhat narrow in height, so maybe this makes a difference. I don't like contact lenses much, but may give them another shot..
(also I use a 5-6/8ths blade, so perhaps blade width is an issue for you?)

I have an old pair of prescription glasses from 1970 that have small rectangular lenses. The weaker lens is fine at that distance, and they're small enough that they're not in the way. Using my current blended trifocal lenses doesn't work well at all while shaving w/ a straight. I'm glad I hung on to that pair, as I also use them for period plays.

The best advice I can give is ditch the glasses, and I wear them too. Unless your almost legally blind do you really need them? I think you will find that your shaving is mostly done by feel anyway so unless your really worried about shaving off your ear or finger or something, try it you might realize they are not necessary for shaving. Thats what I found anyway.

The glasses for me are definitely an issue. I wear rimless glasses and even the slightest touch makes them move around considerably. I'm coming to the conclusion that ditching them for the shave is probably for the best.
I did try shaving without the glasses and without contacts. And you're right, a lot of the shave I could do by feel. But it made me nervous as hell!

I put my contacts in to shave, then take them off and wear my glasses to work. If I had neither, I would need to be about 6" from the mirror to see what I'm doing, haha.

I'm blind in one eye, but I ditch my glasses as I'm fortunate to have excellent vision up close in the good eye. The blind side I do by feel as the mirror throws me off somewhat.

Thanked: 1I was able to blind-shave the back of my neck fairly well and with no blood on the first attempt. I can't imagine it would be too difficult to do a normal shave without the glasses.
I also seem to recall one of our members being completely blind; perhaps he could add some perspective.

I wear no-line bifocals but shave without them. As I read these posts though, I wondered...has anyone tried using a pair of drug store reading glasses? I use those sometimes when doing steady closeup work because they have a greater vision area than the bifocal part of my usual glasses. Any thoughts from the other far sighted among us?
