Thread: A shave back in time

OK, I have tried the test with freshly honed and stropped razor.

No matter how light you go, the razor always shaves thin layer of skin. I think that is the point of this test. Lido Livi is testing the razor in similar manner, and actually slicing off a piece of skin from his palm pad under the smallest finger. Maybe if the razor is not sharp enough, it will fail to dig in, or slice the skin at all?

Yeah I got a similar effect. Though not a deep slice at all. I SWEAR THERE WAS NO MORE BLOODLETTING!

I am sure your blade was in much better condition then mine. I think I may need to take it for a spin on a pasted paddle, as soon I manage to get one from Tony. Still need to order that from him.

Very interesting. Sounds as though he's doing essentially the same as the thumb pad test I've described before, except he is using the thenar eminence (fleshy base of the thumb) instead of the thumb tip.

Also different, he is moving the razor. The way I do it (as taught in American barber manuals) the razor remains still and only the thumb moves along the razors edge. I like holding the razor still as I feel I have more control and less likely to cut the thumb. Also, I touch the thumb dead on to the edge. No angling. No removal of skin.

Either way, the tester should feel the "stickiness" of the edge as it grabs slightly into the flesh.

Excellent post!! I don't think there are any barber shops here in L.A. where they actually shave you. I wish there was, but I fear that with the legal ramifications of a cut, and the high Lawyer to Civilian ratio here, there never will be. I asked my barber if he knew how to shave with a straight (my barber is from Viet Nam) and he told me that he did. I then asked him if he would give me a shave with my razor. He said that the owner would not allow it. One more reason to go to London.
