Default When you get tugging or pulling

Is stropping adequate or is it time for a retouch using a stone?

At that point people will use a pasted strop or touch it off on their finishing hone pending preference and equipment.

If the pasted strop does not work then you will need to drop down to the hones.

What he said. Definitely time for a touchup.

What do you have for hones/pasted strops?

I have a piece of balsa with chromium oxide on one side and iron oxide on the other that i got from Larry at whipped dog and an Ezy Edge razor hone made by Pike.

I would do a few laps (around 5-7) on the CrOx,
IIRC the iron oxide is at around .1 micron and you could use it after the CrOx.
I would try The CrOx and test, if that works and you want to proceed to the Fe2O3 go ahead and give it a whirl.
If not you can try a few more passes on the CrOx and if that won't get the edge back for you it is time for the stones.

Tugging and pulling may mean it needs more than a slight touchup with paste. if I let one of mine go that far I would go right to a hone.

If a light crox touchup doesn't do it it goes to the 3k and up. I have heard Glen say preemptive touching up (maintenance touchup before any edge degradation noticed)has led to extended time away from the hones. I believe that is the way to go if you don't hone. And of course the number one make or break which is the leather strop.

while i haven't noticed any tugging (except maybe on the chin which i notice after i tackled that part of my face on about my fourth shave) i've wandered if the blade could be sharper.(remember, i've only been shaving with a str8 for about 3 weeks). at what point should i try using my CrOx felt? can i hurt anything by trying it?

Sounds like your stropping might be suspect, (not to worry that's normal)
what type of strop (hanging, paddle, loom?) are you using?
If your stropping technique is good you will not hurt anything, and being as your paste is on a board all the better for starting out.

    .
I'm using a hanging strop (3 inch). and i know at least part of my technique is bad because i keep getting small nicks on the edges, only on the "handle" end (what does that mean and how can i change it?).
