Yes, I would tape it as a precaution. The worst that will happen is you might create a slight double bevel if it wasn't honed with tape to begin with.

ok so i shaved three passes with this razor today since i wanted a good shave for Thanksgiving one small nick i got on the throat but i would have done that nick with one of my square tips. i did notice that using the point was a lot more natural today in most places definitely a successful shave.
