Two Pass Daily or Three Pass Every Other Day or Something Else?

Im steadily getting into the swing of straight razor shaving and I m now conquering years of shaving rash and irritation and I only nowadays get the odd nick, usually on my chin when Im thinking about other things then shaving my chin.

What Im finding is that if I shave with two passes daily or three passes every other day I get very little irritation with known products. A three pass will give me a BSS and a two pass is an acceptable DFS although when I run my fingers against the grain I can feel whiskers. I have fair skin so It does look more "shadowy" after two passes. but to me it looks clean and acceptable.

So both methods are suitable and comfortable with my skin. A three pass shave daily very rarely ends up BSS, more a DFS but closer than a two pass day but mostly due to two stubborn patches on my neck, but It does irritate me a little. I don't have to shave everyday but I do love the time to myself and the fresh scents every day. Can you ever get too much I ask myself?

This got me thinking and wondering. What did our fathers do? Did it occur to them to aim for BSS every shave? Did they do One pass, two pass or three?

What do most of you out there prefer to do shave wise? every day, every other, two or three pass or more?

Generally for me, two passes and I'm good for every other day.

My routine is WTG all over, then I reapply lather. Then it's XTG on the cheek area and ATG on the neck area, and done! Sometimes seems it's the shave goes to quickly!!

I aim for 3 passes everyday, but on days I don't have the time i'll settle for one pass and a hybrid atg xtg touch up pass.

WTG, ATG, every other day. Great results.

Yeh I always go with a 3 pass Shave (W,X,ATG) every Mon, Wed &. Fri for work but sometimes more often if I want for going out etc
Now after 7 months get constant BBS with the odd extra directionals in the difficult spots on the neck

Two usually, daily.

Every day WTG, hybrid XTG/ATG, then ATG for moustache and chin, never do touch-ups (too lazy). Always a DFS, I've never had BBS, mainly because of sideways growth in my neck. I find that I slowly learn to get a closer shave, but my main priority is comfort. After all, we discard the hair and keep the skin, the latter may as well be in good condition when done shaving :)

Laurens has a good point. But for me, I just do what is necessary to get a good shave every day during the week. I don't always get it all completely but, after the aftershave it is hours before I feel any stubble peek out. On the weekend sometimes I sandbag and wait until Monday. That's always a really good shave. Like today, preshave oil, 24mm badger, MFW, Tony Miller cow hide and Mr. Sparticus left me happy as can be, Floid black topped it off.

Was that showing off? It took a long time to accumulate all this stuff.

Everyone is different and has to accomodate what their skin will comfortably tolerate. I do a 4 pass shave evry morning, WTG, XTG ear to chin, XTG chin to ear and ATG. If I have done the honing right on the blade used there is virtually no irritation.

I suspect our fathers and grandfathers just did 1 pass and got on with the day.

During the week I perform a 2 pass shave with a few touch up strokes with water as needed. WTG and XTG on cheeks and mouth area, N to S and then S to N with a bit of a scything action on neck (grain runs sideway on, kinda a bugger).

On Saturday I will do a full 3 pass shave and touch up. Usually don't shave on Sunday as it gives my faces a chance to rest.

Play with your routine a bit, see how it goes. Nothing wrong with changing it up. :)

3 passes every other day generally, first wtg, 2nd atg, and third is more of a touch up in certain areas.

Dad hand lathered once with Palmolive. He shaved eith a DE and touched up with water.

I shave according to time available.

Me too, but I also thought it was mandatory for students not to shave. I guess I'm way ahead of everyone.

Actually, I'm doing an internship and if I don't turn up, they'll notice. Fortunately, my supervisor chooses to spend most of his mornings parked on the highway among a billion other cars with their engines running.

And you bike in? Sorry just trying to guess :) what are you learning.to be?

I usually shave every other day, two passes, one North/South, then one XTG face/Hybrid ATG/XTG neck.

On a date night or other special occasions I do three passes.

I generally shave every 2-3 days and I'll do a three pass (1-WTG, 2-XTG in opposite directions and some ATG touch ups). I very rarely do a full ATG pass, I find it's not necessary after refining my process over the years.

Now everyday, that's another issue. My skin's far too sensitive for daily shaving but once in a blue moon I can get away with consecutive days if I knock it down to a 1-1/2 pass shave. The results aren't up to my usual standards but it's acceptable and better yet my skin isn't red and raw from over-doing it.

I mix it up both on time between shaves and strokes but id say what i do most is atg(i know thats wierd but i seem to get better results so why fight it) then wtg followed by cold water touch up usually only around my jaw line. Im getting where i can accomplish this in about 15 minutes from building lather to splashing on my aftershave and still get near bbs with very little irritation although i fear the day i get rid of my goatee and have to learn to shave my chin as i imagine that will double my time for a while.

I thought you might get conversational :) Yes, I bike in, 11.5 km (which is about 7 American kilometres for you, Aussie) of sight-seeing route to the university and 10 km or ~6 USkm short route back to home.

I'm in the last year of my master Life Science & Technology. Experience taught me almost nobody knows what that means. In short, it's biotechnology, the study of replacing dirty, old-fasioned oil-based processes by clean, modern bio-processes.

Currently, I'm researching snake venom for bio-active peptides (small proteins). For example, a snake venom may cause low blood pressure, which can be a cure for people with high blood pressure. The nice things about using peptides/proteins as a medicine, are low concentration needed, completely bio-degradable and very little or no side-effects.

I really enjoy working on this project, it's challenging and one of the first study-related things I can explain to my mum!

I was about to ask what your course meant, then you explained it, which was good, then you said GM crops, which when I was in the uk were EVIL as they were going to contaminate all of the indigenous non gm carrots and such. :)
I guessed you would cycle and I am glad you do (provided you seen spreading GM carrots and tulips throughout Holland, the seeds flying off you with gay abandon as you wend your way home), I started a thread about bikes in the fitness forum, you should post a piccie. Regards ed.

I had a shave tonight and instead of my all over XTG second pass I opted for a hybrid second pass.

I went XTG on most of my face but ATG in a couple of the rough areas (at the bottoms of my cheeks below my sideburns, and under my chin) I went ATG straight after my WTG Pass and it seems to no detriment.

I have ended up with a almost BSS, (Neck hairs a problem again) but with no irritation and I shaved yesterday, so very good for me. So it seems a two pass hybrid has it's place and it's something I'm happy to know about.

It seems I have learned something new again. Thank you gentlemen for your help :)

WTG, Xtg, every other day. Unless I am testing out a newly honed razor, then I add an ATG. Takes about 20 minutes start to finish.

I'm glad to hear the GM debate is evolving. Back when I was a (smaller) kid, people would just be frightened by genetic modification and think it was dangerous to everything and everyone and somehow scientists were plotting to destroy humanity or something. Now, people point out that genetically modified organisms do not belong in nature, as they will compete with wild type organisms and containing their growth to the last single organism is virtually impossible.

What most people don't know, is that the "wild types" I just refered to are also heavily manipulated by industries. The thing is, if you expose a bag of seeds to a big dose of UV light, sigarette smoke, electrons or radiation, 99.9% will die and 0.01% may grow just a little better than the original seeds. Only, you don't have to tell your customers what you did with the seeds. And the main drawback is that you don't know what other new properties have been created, which you do know with directed genetic modification.

Either way, it's an interesting topic! Who knows, perhaps in 10 or 20 years all crops have been genetically modified. Who knows when people start genetically enhancing themselves...


Can you link me to the cyclists thread? I'm not much of a cyclist and my bike is not much of a bike, I simply enjoy it better than the bus, it saves me a little time and I like to get a little excercise, as working in the lab is mostly sitting on my ass stretching my brains and typing things on a certain shaving forum.

Can you link me to the cyclists thread? Sorry laurens, I have no idea how to link threads. It is in the finer things in life, subforum exercise or fitness or something. I am in no way a bike snob, and at the moment I am a pretty poor cyclist but I want to get fitter and cycle more.

Neither am I a bike snob, as you so adequately put it. I used to play table tennis at a pretty high level in my birth town, but then I moved and could not find a club at a high enough level with nice enough people. Cycling is the only movement I get, and ballroom dancing, which can be pretty demanding.

You clever! I'm not sure about how to copy URLs in Tapatalk, I removed the app when I found it to drain my battery. When you're just using your browser, you should be able to find the address bar, hold your finger on the address until you get options like "Select all" and "Copy". When typing a message, hold your finger in the message window and you should get the option "Paste".

Most of the time a 2 pass shave i can get a nearly bbs with a 2 pass and im most of the time to lazy to do another one.

Poor Dear Old Dad. He's using those single blade disposable Bic shavers. This is surprising since my 'Ol Man's Mantra is a Life Lesson that combines his profession (he's a salesman), his work ethic and feelings on shaving. What he continues to say is: "Selling is like shaving, son. If you don't do it every day, you're a bum." So to shave every day with that white and yellow Bic disposable...well it has taken on a tragic quality given what I know about what comes from SR shaving.

Oh, and for those of you who don't shave every day, Pop and I aren't calling you a bum!

The Bic razor really is a bit of a tragedy after straights. I guess it was seen as progress.

Usually two passes, but it's fun to take the time to three passes now and then.
Is it really possible to get completely smooth with just one pass?

It is, but I believe not for everyone. Some people can do only ATG and get a great shave. Others say they need two or three passes. As I never hurry when shaving and enjoy to shave, I always do my 2.5 passes, but I suspect I could go only ATG.

I'm in a similar situation....For me the best if I shave every day, but at the evening with one pass and another very-very light second pass...

For me I can get a good shave with one pass XTG, but it looks shadowy and feels rough when I rub my finger ATG. It looks acceptable though, but it doesn't last long before I need to shave again.

If I shave right off ATG I get a very smooth irritated face. Its not a comfortable thing to do, but it works. I don't like to shave like that, is more about comfort for me. Recently I have been trying a WTG then ATG shave and that for me is uncomfortable too following the shave.

TBH I'm still trying to find out the best way I can achieve the closest shave with no irritation at all.

C'mon guys, you're making me jealous !!!... I'm trapped with those horrid disposables till I can get my hands on a half decent shaving kit. I generally hack in every direction with them till I get something that satisfies ;)
At least I can say I've never used that stuff in a can for my lather, Dad was fussy about using a brush and a "good" shaving soap. Oh how I can't wait to draw my eager trembling hand close to my face with a straight razor in it... that'll be an experience :)
