    Default Finding growth patterns

Here is a simple way to find your beards natural growth pattern. 12-24 hours after a fresh shave just apply some of your favorite aftershave to a cotton ball and apply it to your face using vertical swipes from top to bottom. You will feel hesitation exactly where the grain changes and you will also see cotton debris following swipes that are against the grain (ATG). Hopefully this will help people who are new to straight shaving "get a feel" for their beards growth pattern and in return achieve a better shave.

IMO an easier way is to stop shaving for a week and then examine your face in the mirror.

Yeah, I know, that's heresy to say around here but it's as easy as not picking up a razor in the morning
    kevinred and Walterbowens like this.

Both great tips but I would think if you can't feel with your hand which way the stubble is rougher than maybe you should stay away from a straight :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Agreed! This was just another painless experiment that could possibly help someone get to know their own face without growing a beard.

LOL you may have a point but some people learn by visualization and there's no better way to learn growth patterns than to see it for yourself
