Bic Stories: Have you ever had to leave the straight razor alone?
A few days ago I was hit in the face by a line drive. The hit broke my cheekbone and eye socket. I'm feeling okay and have surgery scheduled for next week, but I'm not lookin' too pretty. This morning I noticed that a shave was long overdue, but because of swelling, loss of feeling, and an inability to see very well out of my right eye, I *sigh* left the straight blade alone and Bic-ed my face. Bummer.
Anyone else have a story to share about hanging up your straight blade for a disposable? My tale of woe stems from traumatic face injury, but I'm curious about any and all other reasons that SR shavers have had to stop for any period of time.
I'll update once my peripheral vision allows the the bumpy, prickly, bic madness to stop and I can scrape my face the right way again."Seize the carp."

I am sorry to hear of your injury and hope that you recover swiftly.
Mine is not in the same league, but as a beginner, learning... there's only so much SR my face can take. Until I get my technique down, I switch between a SR and a DE. My chin, especially, and underneath my bottom lip, is a mess. Numerous nicks and cuts. Using a SR there is out of the question right now.
Although I have not switched back to a disposable, were I in your position I would do whatever is necessary. Take your time, heal. The SR with be there waiting for you. MHO.

Ow. Hate to hear about your injury. Hope it all goes back together right - and fast.
Busted my leg two weeks ago and went on the wagon for one shave. I fired up the Braun because pain pills and wobbly standing didn't seem to fit with a razor. That lasted for one shave and then I worked up a new strategy. Yes. I quit for one shave in the past nine months. Now I shave sitting down."We'll talk, if you like. I'll tell you right out, I am a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk."

Thanked: 1195The last time for me was a few years ago while on vacation. I never bring a SR with me when flying, the DE being my preferred travel razor. I forgot to pack DE blades so I had to resort to using a double bladed Bic disposable. Using the same prep as I normally would, the shaves were pretty good overall but I could feel stubble growing back very quickly, much faster than I was used to.
The funny thing is that I had my old Mach III on hand as well, found it at the bottom of my shaving kit. I tried it for half a pass before giving up and carried on with the Bic as the shave was far better. Go figure!

If you can find a single bladed disposal, they give a pretty good shave using wet shaving prep.

That's just one more reason I recommend using a good ole 1925 Schizik (or equivalent) to make the transition into SR shaving.
Then you have a not-so-repulsive backup system. And that 100-count stash of your favorite DE blades becomes a lifetime supply.
Best of luck in the surgery and mend well. The last line-drive that hit me struck a non-boney area but did inflict severe pain for hours, yeah-that area, and not the "area" either. It was one exactly specific area.
But I did get my voice back down eventually.Last edited by WadePatton; 03-20-2014 at 12:34 AM.

I know your pain.
Broke my leg in three places five years ago today. Had a screw through my tibia, ankle and fibula for three months, therapy for 7 months. Ankle still hurts.
As for the OP from Dorf, I really hope all works well with the surgery. When I had both hands worked on last month I used a Gillette adjustable for two weeks. Thanks to a recommendation from Hirlau (John) I used Sharp blades and Personna SS.
Good luck with your recovery.
