Default When good shaves go bad the first thing I do is...

7-15 licks on polyester + CrOx crayon; another 30-50 licks on leather and my chin is once again smooth as a baby's back.

    You?

I go with 20-30 laps on a PbO coated linen strop then 75-100 laps on leather. Never fails to do the job of refreshing a slightly dull blade..

How will we know which is the best first strike technique?

I don't think it's really a matter of "What's the best..." so much as "What works for YOU, the individual shaver. They're all Good.

As for me...I've tried CrOx, Diamond, Newspaper, and Pencil Lead (carbon)...they all work. I just find it really easy to use my 'Griffon Strop Aide' (essentially lead oxide) and it never yet has failed me when it comes to edge improvement.

When I'm feeling lazy(most of the time) I just postpone doing anything to the razor and pick up another one, when I'm out of sharp razors I go to the Nani 12k, I've never tried pastes.

Jumbo , sounds like home. Have a cotton webbing strop with Crox . 20ish on that and it usually starts to listen.

I do the same as Wolfpack34...leaded linen strop...30 laps, then leather 50 laps. PbO is the way for me. Always refreshes!

If I feel a razor is starting to drop off in the sharpness department I'll make a mental note for the next shave. This means that the razor still shaves but feels like the edge could be better and stropping no longer does the trick. The next step is 10 laps of chrome ox, which is usually enough to keep it going for a long time. After 3 paste touch ups I'll bust out a hone, unfortunately that means my hones don't see a lot of use

A lot can be said for being proactive in edge maintenance. If you need to take drastic steps to refresh an edge that indicates that you let the edge slip a bit too much .

..........Go to the Chromium Oxide for 10x, then cotton webbing 15x and Leather 60x. If that doesn't work I move on to the next razor until I can put the dull one on the hones.
I didn't see anyone mention a Barbers hone? I have several and don't use them and I'm not sure why...might have to start
