When good shaves go bad the first thing I do is...
7-15 licks on polyester + CrOx crayon; another 30-50 licks on leather and my chin is once again smooth as a baby's back.

I go with 20-30 laps on a PbO coated linen strop then 75-100 laps on leather. Never fails to do the job of refreshing a slightly dull blade..

How will we know which is the best first strike technique?

I don't think it's really a matter of "What's the best..." so much as "What works for YOU, the individual shaver. They're all Good.
As for me...I've tried CrOx, Diamond, Newspaper, and Pencil Lead (carbon)...they all work. I just find it really easy to use my 'Griffon Strop Aide' (essentially lead oxide) and it never yet has failed me when it comes to edge improvement.

When I'm feeling lazy(most of the time) I just postpone doing anything to the razor and pick up another one, when I'm out of sharp razors I go to the Nani 12k, I've never tried pastes.

Before doing anything at all, I'd be inclined to take a look at the edge and bevel with a 10X loupe.

I'm with Baxxer. I just grab the next in rotation. Since it was put away stropped it is ready for action.
The easy road is rarely rewarding.

Thanked: 1587Yeah, I strop the beejeebers out of it and if that doesn't improve things I add it to the "to hone" pile and just grab another razor from the storage box. Generally when I shave it's as part of getting ready for something (usually work) so I don't have time then and there to muck around with honing.

Jumbo , sounds like home. Have a cotton webbing strop with Crox . 20ish on that and it usually starts to listen.
