I'm glad someone revived this thread, because I've changed my mind and approach. Originally (old), I was a swirler, I think because I like the fun of it and thought it did the best job. However, then I got my first Simpson Brush, and the instructions that came with it said, swirling ruined brushes ?!? So, thought ok, let's try something different. i began with swirl on the soap, but paint on my face technique, and behold...1) I get better coverage of my beard; and 2) I enjoy it more and feel like I'm "rising up" my beard....so a painter I am! Most important, it helps me focus on my lather and get a better shave

Thanked: 0If my whiskers are long enough that any lather can make them go one direction or another, I have a full beard. Except for a few areas on my neck, they are standing up anyway, so that is not needed from any lather. My beard is extremely tough too. I've had barber shop shaves with shavettes, and it is always the same - 2 to 3 blades on a shavette for my face. All that I need is to keep the hairs hydrated and to keep my face lubed up. I plaster it on as thick as possible.
