Your doing fine. in summary you have to let your face become accustomed to a Straight. Too many passes, too much fiddling around and I wound up with razor burn or a nick because I was shaving above my pay grade at the time. Master WTG and then after a while as in your face will tolerate more activity take another pass. Your face is the ultimate in feedback. If you catch yourself stroking your face for no apparent reason...Yeah you got it right.Too much of a good thing and you have to put down your toy for a few to let your face recover. We have all been there and done that.

Not sure if it was mentioned above, but, practiced skin stretching to bring up the hairs is a plus when shaving with any razor and particularly with a straight!

I'm a newbie to and the way my beard is and grows I have to go 3 passes. I discovered the perfect combo that may be helpful to you.
First, I use poraso Pre Shave ( you can use whatever preshave you want) then lather up and go with the grain. Then I clean my face put a hot towel or water on my face again apply pre shave, lather up and then go against the grain.
Then for my 3rd and final I again clean my face hot towel or water, but this time I use JUST the Poraso pre shave and I will go against the grain and touch up.
The better you get at maneuvering and keeping your razor at just the right edge, the less irritation you will get doing that 3rd pass.
This has worked for me and is just my opinion
