You just have to figure out the grain and hope it doesn't go sideways. You have to experiment. Pulling the skin as tight as possible. Try different razor angles and different strokes ie wtg, atg-if possible, scything motion.
The neck is tough for most people. getting a BBS shave on the neck is a matter of having a fortuitious growth pattern and much skill. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 1My neck hair grows straight up and flat against the skin. One thing I've had good success with is stretching the skin back. In other words, I push the skin on my neck toward the back of my neck (right under the ear). I saw Lynn do this in his video and thought I'd try it. If I do this and shave from my jaw to the bottom of my neck, I get a close shave.

And... er... what do you do if it IS sideways?

My neck hair grows out sideways and up towards the ears. Sorry to say, it is pretty much impossible to go ATG. I know I have tired.
Two things help in this situation, a very sharp razor and a well developed scything motion. The scything motion is a bit hard for me to explain. I don't see anything described in the barber's manual that describes what I am talking about. Hmmm, I have been meaning to do a shaving video in response to Namdnas' video. I may just do that.

So it's not a straight-through motion, but a sort of slow, short "r" stroke?

I actually add some sideways movement to that motion. This is a little risky though, so be careful. Super light touch is needed and a steady hand.
