Thanked: 5cold water prep and SR shaving
Does anybody use cold water shaving technique for SR shaving? And if so do you get a lot of pulling and tugging compared to hot water prep before SR shaving.
Take care.

I have tried it ( a couple times when in a hurry) and I have to say I did not experience any tugging or pulling however I did experience a lack of comfort. I love the hot towels before and a very hot scuttle to lay the loaded brush in. It just feels good and that's part of a good shave. back when shaving was a chore that's what I did. Now that it has become an enjoyable hobby, I stick with hot prep and lathers. Heck I even cover the scuttle while shaving to retain the heat LOL

Thanked: 3225Been shaving using cold water for over a year now. No cold water prep just splash the face and go. No tugging or pulling when using cold water but then again never had any when using hot water either.

Cold, good, tepid, alright, hot, so so. Cold water shave, for me, is any temperature under very warm. I've used every temp from ice cold (ending with an ice cube rub on my face) to lukewarm. All levels resulting in 99% no irritation, no tugging, no pulling.
While cold water shaving isn't for every one, I feel that more will switch to it as they age. Skin develops its's own idiosyncrasies as we age and becomes sensitive to a new range of irritants and the such. Especially if you are in the skin type group that will develop Rosacea. There you become sensitive to hot water, and many will find menthol and alcohol an irritant in the sense that it enhances the condition . To keep outbreaks down it is also suggested to limit alcohol intake and avoid very hot temperature foods (spice hot is alright). Bit of a bummer unless you don't mind looking like W C Fields who had a particularly severe case of it."The sharpening stones from time to time provide officers with gasoline."

Good prep adds to the experience, I hate cold water shaves just because I don't have to , but I get just as good a shave either way ,, I think it all comes down to your lather , your angle (technique) still need more experience, and last but not least the edge on your razor, stropping can be a culprit when the blade is not cutting hairs. But I,m sure it could be other things ,, I,m just going on what happened in the beginning on my shaves. Good luck. Tc

I switched to mostly cold water prep and shaving about 4 months ago after doing the "hot, hot towel, scuttle lather" thing for almost a year. I found cold water was in fact more comfortable and I focus more on the lather on my face than I did when I was spending all that time whipping it up hot in a scuttle. I also face lather now, and I pay a LOT of attention to what the lather on my face looks and sounds like under the brush.
I find it easier, more comfortable and I get just as good a shave.Last edited by Haroldg48; 09-26-2014 at 11:58 PM.

I tried cold water shaving tonight. After shower I used Aloe Vera based shaving gel and then I applied my lather which is prepared hot but applied cold.
I rinsed my face with cold water between passes. I finished shaving with lots of cold water and AS.
Quality of cold water shaving is same as hot. But I have sensitive skin and cold water gives me less irritation.
I will try another couple cold water shave. But so far my thoughts are very high.
