Had a Barber give me a shave today
I've been shaving with a Straight Razor for almost 3 years now. I can get a great shave on my face but I've never hit it out of the park on my neck. My beard grows right to left so it's hard to get a smooth shave on my neck. My wife bought me a gift certificate to get a shave but I never used it (just put the gift certificate in a drawer for about a year). I've been battling cancer for the past 18 months including a couple of surgeries and a treatment for a year that is kind of like chemo. I had my last treatment Monday and I will be able to go back to work on Dec 1st. My wife scheduled an appointment at the barbers for me today so I went in and used my gift certificate. I would suggest you have this done at least once in your life. This was a Cancer Free Celebration for me but I may have picked up a new technique. The barber got my neck "baby smooth". He used a much shorter and quicker stroke than what I do. I can't see myself getting a shave very often but it was pretty cool and now I know that it is possible to get my neck smooth so I have to work on that (I kind of accepted that I was getting the best shave that my neck allowed).

First time I had a straight shave was in Kuwait. Once I realized the potential, I was hooked.

Good luck on your continued recovery...
Many of us have the swirly neck hairs...
My system-
Buffing - those short strokes that you probably sensed from your Barber shave
Two finger stretching - shaving (buffing) in between your outstretched thumb and forefinger (carefully) using one digit to "pin" and the other to stretch away from the direction of growth.
You not only have to keep the skin taut - you need to try to pull the hairs upright.
Our problem seems to come from not only the direction (swirls) but also the angle, with some hairs coming out almost parallel to the skin as apposed to perpendicular - like the "good" hairs do.
It was trying to learn how to use a Kamisori - and having to contort everything - that made that work for me. After I set the Kamisori aside I kept the lessons.
Good luck and Smooth Shaving..Last edited by MJC; 11-19-2014 at 11:38 PM. Reason: Spelling

I thank the Universe each and every day for the continuance of my remission - going on eight years now. May the Universe bless you, also, with continued health and future.
As for the neck shaving, I do my neck first with a south to north pass, then a north to south pass and spend too much time picking around my Adam's apple with the point of the razor in all directions to get the hairs cut."The sharpening stones from time to time provide officers with gasoline."
