Thanked: 4shaving your head?
Does anyone shave their head with a straight razor? I am not going to lie I am a little scared to try without knowing other people do it.

Thanked: 37Once or twice a week with either a SR or a shavette. The only reason I use a shavette is because the SR gets dull too fast shaving my head. It is not as hard as you think if you can feel the angle. By that I mean feel by the cutting if the angle is too steep or not steep enough.
For the back, until you get used to where the blade is you can turn the blade away from you and touch your head with the spine. Then rotate the blade flat to your head. This will give you a reference to where the blade is.

Yes. We have a whole forum for head shaving now.

Some of us shave with str8, some shavettes, many with DE's. I shave with only a str8 about 2 to 3 times per week. It takes quite a bit longer but it is enjoyable if you razor is keen and your edge doesn't dull from technique. You could try it on short sections then clean up or do the rest with your normal "head" blade until you get used to it. It really is not that hard once you get the gitters out. What I find that helps me is stropping between passes, especially when doing ATG. But on a good edge day (I'm working and starting to get good edges in honing) I can get a BBS head shave with a str8 pretty easy without irritation. But I'm still working on my technique. I have also found the guillotine stroke and buffing strokes to be of quite a lot of help. but be careful; you can cut yourself easily with the guillotine stroke. You will cut yourself at some time but once you get past the fear it gets easier.Last edited by rlmnshvstr8; 02-18-2015 at 03:31 PM.

I used to use an electric clipper on zero and then shave with a DE. Now I do 1 pass with a straight and finish with a DE. The straight leaves it closer and I have less work to do with the DE. Resulting in less irritation and a closer shave. I shave about once a week. When I try to keep up with it I just use a DE daily. The straight I find best for mowing down growth. I also like to use creamo and plain water for 2nd or 3rd passes. Shave soaps dry out to quick for me.

I posted in the Head-shaver section about my adventure. Fourth shave with a straight and I got it into my head to give it a shot for my dome, too.

Thanked: 4I just find it pointless to keep wasting money on razor blades when i have 9 SR's and 3 more coming. I dont mind honing a lot if i have too. It will give me something to do after i get done work.

Yup . . . I am in the process of ordering a PRC Hydra (new version) and, when it arrives, I will have a 1/4 hollow and full hollow to choose from. Then I will start to lurk for vintage blades.
DE will be for scalp only, until I am comfortable enough with the Straight to give it a go full-time.
