I don't know what the thing is called but I've used a twisty thing with several blades that rotate against each other for years. It's much safer for sticking into your nose and ears.

Used the lighter trick myself a couple of times. Here's a tip, don't try it with a Zippo blu.

Old time barbers would never use a razor for the nose. They used a pair of scissors.

There are many tools just for that. Feather makes a really neat little mechanical trimmer that works great.

After my razor passes the HHT, I move on to the NHT.

If you can stick the pain pluck them, not for the faint hearted but you do build up a certain tolerance after a while speed is your friend while attempting this scary procedure.

Ouch!!! I use an electric trimmer and a manually operated twisting tool, both designed for the purpose. It sucks getting older.

I have done it with a straight, but only when one is sticking out. Just a gentle press of the blade; kind of like popping a single arm hair (but not at the base). It's really not a big deal, at least not the way I do it. I usually just leave the hairs be, though.
