When you are on the 1K hone and you look at the edge, if you turn the blade slightly so you can see the point of the apex, it should be a nice clean and straight edge the whole way along, you should not see sparkly sections or white lines, at that point the bevel will be set. There are some very good pictures in the honing section in some of the threads.

In your initial post it says you have 1K, 3K and Welsh slate hones. 3K to a Welsh slate is a really long jump, and the welsh slate is not known for it's ability to cut and edge, it is usually a very slow hone. You my want to think about an 8K synthetic hone, it should move you along a little quicker.

also I like the standing hair and tpt test (try to take hair off your arm at the toe, heal, and mid point)
also the thumb pad test, place your thumb on the edge and try to roll your thumb left to right, as you roll your thumb it should feel like your thumb pad and razor want to follow each other, and with any more downward pressure it feels like your going to cut yourself, then you know that you have a bevel set. d that from toe to heal, if at at y point you do not get the above feeling, back to the 3k with attention to those areas

just noticed you said you ordered a 3k, if you have any 1k paper, you get get a good start , just wrap it around a flat surface , and go to town

Any you can recommend? I found one on Amazon once, but it wouldn't work with a MAC, and even on a PC, I could view and save, but when I tried to aces the saved file, it was not there. I returned it.

Its a driver issue, the scope is effectively a web cam. Unfortunitly Mac is very closed minded, try using windows or Linux operating system.
