you probably know this Roger, but if you shave every other day , your face has time to heal up from any irritation during your last shave ,that's why it seems to work better but everyday is a good indicator that it is razor burn, from too much pressure , trying to get it smooth and its still healing from the day before. I am an every day shaver who had the irritation in the beginning , and I tried different prep methods. the most helpful to me was pressure ,or lack of it. I realized the beard was coming off even if I didn't bear down , so now I use a smooth feather light touch with a sharp blade and now no irritation ,, still shaving every day except my goatee, got to have some hair flapping in the breeze while riding the sled tc oh BTW I tried oils , didn't work for me , and I tried proraso pre shave , and it helped the burn, and I used it after the shave as a post shave , but then my wife ,, said Noxema was the exact same thing for about 10 times less cost and at wally world she was right
“ I,m getting the impression that everyone thinks I have TIME to fix their bikes”

Being that you don't have to shave daily the every other day, or less, is a good thing. If you haven't already tried cold water shaving give it a whirl. I have been cold water prep/shaving for a few years now and wouldn't go back to hot if you paid me.
I've always had to limit myself to two passes due to sensitive skin. Once I learned no pressure irritation was seldom a problem, but many guys who complained of irritation found cold water shaving to correct that problem.
Following the 1905 book I splash cold water on my face, lather, rub the lather in vigorously, then relather. That is the extent of my prep. I do one pass, then relather and a followup pass. I do North - South, South-North, but direction is up to the individual.
Truth be told, I frequently do one pass and call it good. I'm retired too, and my cat doesn't seem to care if I'm well shaven or not as long as he gets his food, water and a clean litter box.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

It has been 1 1/2 days since I shaved and got ready for church today. I did a one pass shave with the grain and to tell you the truth not too much difference in what beard was left compared to 1 wg and 1 ag. I may just eliminate the against part for a while. now if I were a young man going out on a date I go with against side to side and anyother direction you could thing of but after 29 years the wife has seen me in every condition you could imagine.

Thanked: 4827My bead grows very flat against my skin. I rarely if ever do much for a with the grain pass because of it. If I am going to do a one pass shave it is one pass against the grain, which is also my first pass when doing a 2 1/2 pass shave

Thanked: 220I have the exact same problem, so I just shave every other day. I can't even get close/smooth results with 1 day of growth, it's like my razor is dull. Everybody's beard is different, just have to adjust.
