A friend once told me I had an old mans beard. along the jaw line grows in every direction and very stiff. That's the area that gives the most problem. if I use little pressure then the beard stays and if I use enough to get the beard then it's a little uncomfortable. Now that's on an every day shave . if I wait long enough that the beard gets out there some then there's really no problem. I have had this problem all my life. in boot camp many years ago my face was always red and soar. I have used every razor know to man I think and still have the same problem. I 've never used pre-shave oil all I have done is after the shower I lather and shave. one pass with and one or two against the grain. at the very end if I steel feel stubble then I wet my hand rub the spot the against the grain again. Next trip to wally world i'll look for the pre-shave oil. does the pre-shave oil effect the lather. this will be a first for me.

Thanked: 4822I am not an oil fan. I have tried it but did not feel that it gave much and I felt it was messy. There are others that swear by it. For me the cheapest route is Noxema, followed by Proraso. You should experiment though. Try the oil and if it doesn't do it for you try some others. I do prefer shaving with a pre shave than without. Maybe your face will like it too!

The only pre-shave oil or treatment that has worked for me was recommended by Obie.
The Proraso pre-shaves are great, if you want to essentially use a cheap unscented soap as the Proraso pre-shaves are very powerfully scented.
The oils were messy and gunked up my brush, and partially ruined the lather.
The Castle Forbes Unscented Pre-Shave Oil recommended by Obie is perfect, easily applied, hydrates the beard, doesn't smell or gunk up the brush - I use it frequently and it really makes for a closer shave, especially on the neck area for me.

Thanked: 1184I had a tendency to get those spots with an ungodly amount of passes. It's like you forget about that in your determination to get those little left over whiskers. I eventually started to pay attention to which passes worked. Now I get em without the irritation in those spots which for me was the chin and onder the jaw.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I can't take credit for this and forget who it was but it follows RezDog's idea. When you shave after 2 or 3 days you get a lot of feedback from your whiskers. If you shave every day you might be subconsciously trying for that same amount of feedback by bearing down on the blade. I occasionally use Truefitt & Hill pre-shave oil and have use Proraso. I don't think either one made a lick of difference and never affected the lather. I'm only continuing to use the T&H to use it up as I am presently on a mission to use every single soap/cream and after shave I have before re-upping my supply....should be about 2019 if I live that long.

you probably know this Roger, but if you shave every other day , your face has time to heal up from any irritation during your last shave ,that's why it seems to work better but everyday is a good indicator that it is razor burn, from too much pressure , trying to get it smooth and its still healing from the day before. I am an every day shaver who had the irritation in the beginning , and I tried different prep methods. the most helpful to me was pressure ,or lack of it. I realized the beard was coming off even if I didn't bear down , so now I use a smooth feather light touch with a sharp blade and now no irritation ,, still shaving every day except my goatee, got to have some hair flapping in the breeze while riding the sled tc oh BTW I tried oils , didn't work for me , and I tried proraso pre shave , and it helped the burn, and I used it after the shave as a post shave , but then my wife ,, said Noxema was the exact same thing for about 10 times less cost and at wally world she was right

Well I will try oil but it's not for every shave just when I have to shave 2-3 days in a row. most of the time it's every other day or maybe even every 3 day. I'm retired now and where I live looking presentable is not required. Heck if I'm out side and have to go well I just walk up to the nearest tree and raise one leg. but now and then we go to town and movies and the like so I do have to look like a human.
