I've always had to limit myself to two passes due to sensitive skin. Once I learned no pressure irritation was seldom a problem, but many guys who complained of irritation found cold water shaving to correct that problem.

Following the 1905 book I splash cold water on my face, lather, rub the lather in vigorously, then relather. That is the extent of my prep. I do one pass, then relather and a followup pass. I do North - South, South-North, but direction is up to the individual.

Truth be told, I frequently do one pass and call it good. I'm retired too, and my cat doesn't seem to care if I'm well shaven or not as long as he gets his food, water and a clean litter box.
It has been 1 1/2 days since I shaved and got ready for church today. I did a one pass shave with the grain and to tell you the truth not too much difference in what beard was left compared to 1 wg and 1 ag. I may just eliminate the against part for a while. now if I were a young man going out on a date I go with against side to side and anyother direction you could thing of but after 29 years the wife has seen me in every condition you could imagine.
