Thanked: 96Hand position
I was watching Lynn's shaving for beginners and I notices he had one finger toward the blade side of the scale and three behind the scale. I've been having problems with the angles, being new to straights, so I tried it. I had two and two. What a difference. First I was able to see the blade and angle clearer which really helped the quality of the shave. Second it is easier to see trouble areas like under the nose and chin. I tried changing the scales pointing down instead of up and that made it easier to see and move the blade. At some point I may go back to the scales up, but for the present, I am getting good results so until the training wheels come off, I will stay with it. It goes to show how trial and error brings you to the right technique for you, if you have the patience and styptic pencil to do it.

Thanked: 4827My hand and scale position change for the different parts of my face. I think as long as you have very good control and it is a comfortable grip you are doing it right. Many people are very rigid in learning, I think it is important to feel free to vary your technique a little here and a little there just to get to what works best for you.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Yup . . . I usually have just my ring finger on the tail because of my large hands, but I am always moving the blade around, changing grip position, depending on what part of the face I am trying to clear. I am a firm believer in NOT being bound to a particular grip or method. If it works, it's "right".
