Thanked: 1Scraping not tugging
My Dovo went from wonderfully smooth to scraping like cat claws in a single day. Same technique, same pre shave, same soap. I haven't bumped it and don't believe that i rolled the edge while stropping. I think maybe my razor is telling me it needs refreshing. Thoughts??

Thanked: 1184How many shaves you got from it, more the 120 ? Was the soap maybe a little drier that day ? Does stropping the hell out it change things? If all no then yep, maybe.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 4827A good squint with a loupe could tell you a thing or two. To go from smooth to yuck in one day would leave me suspicious that something bad did not go on. I have had mystery dings show up and have been certain that my hands only had touched the razor, which meant that I did something bad without noticing. It happens. Get it fixed and get back to smooth.

Does anyone else in the house have access to the razor ?
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 96Sounds like your ready for a refresh. When my razors start to tug, I go 7 full laps on my Norton 8k stone, 7 full laps on my 12k stone and strop. Run the razor over the back of your arm to see if it is cutting the hair. If it is, your all set, if not you need to send it out to be professionally honed.

Thanked: 3795A razor should not go from shaving to sucking in a single day. This is not normal wear.
Something traumatic must have happened to your edge.
Regardless of what happened, if it ain't shaving now you are going to have to deal with it. Assuming that you just rolled the edge, you MIGHT be able to fix it with perfect stropping. Just strop your blade 50 on linen and 100 on leather and see what happens with the next shave.
If it is not any better, then you are going to have to move on to honing. You can start gentle approach first. Start with a higher grit hone, then strop, then shave again. If that does not fix it, then you can work your way down to a lower grit hone. Alternatively, you can go all the way down to a bevel re-set on up, but this should be your last option.

Thanked: 1Bought a coticule and followed the instructions given me by the vendor. Worked like a charm!!! Dunno what happened to make it go bad, unless one of the boys,14 and 17, decided to try stropping when I wasn't looking. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
