Mark, that does seem to make sense to me as well. I think when the heat makes the edge expand it would become duller. although at such a small level I dont think it will have such a huge impact to make or break your shave.

I don't think so either!
I have alternated between wiping and rinsing in hot water and I have come to the conclusion that I prefer rinsing in hot water!

Because the actual cutting edge is the thinnest part of the blade it reacts more to the heat, the closer to the cutting point you get. This has the effect of stretching the point out making it a teensy bit sharper. In theory I say. That's not my theory either. I'm just relating what the experts have told me. I have no reason to doubt them. They've been right on pretty much everything else so far.

I would like to read more about it!

Ok, Don't know why this happened but I immersed two razors in very hot water for a few minutes and it desatroyed the edges, which came out with rust spots and corroded edges.
Any ideas?

Just plain hot water? Never seen such a thing!

I clean mine using facial tissues, they get between the scales really easy and are very absorbant. I also have the razors sitting on a dedicated shelf with silica gel bags underneath them to absorb any stray moisture.

yup, just very hot water, no additions at all. I was very puzzled, and irritated that my time honing had been wasted. I won't use it to clean razors any more, and I use cold water to rinse my blade.
Maybe I am paranoid and it was just a set of unusual circumstances?

I use hot water all the time. Never had any trouble at all.
But of course I never let them soak in hot water before. I just dipped them and shook them off and then dried them.
Are they new? Have you been using them for some time now or did you pick them up used just recently?

They were used razors that I honed up and then thought I had best sterilise to the best of my ability before I shaved with them. They were only in there for a few minutes and then they were ruined. I think next time I will look for a different sterilising method.Nick
