Thanked: 220I'll agree with most who posted here, the razor has not been sharpened to "shave ready" specifications. You need a sharp blade before you can refine your technique. Send her away, honing services are a dime a dozen!

Thanked: 4Send it out. You will not regret it. Once you eliminate that factor, you will be able to concentrate on your controlables such as technique and lather.

I have a Dovo from Amazon which I have not been able to refresh or strop into any state sharp enough to get a comfortable shave. I'm sending it off to Lynn. I also got a number of SRs from ebay which were supposed to be "shave ready", which detailed descriptions of the honing and stropping process - they sucked too, and I sent all of them to Lynn. I will get them back tomorrow. One way that I have found to separate the variables (your technique from your razor sharpness) is to try a shavette (That may be a curse word on this forum, but I wanted to keep practicing while I waited for my real SRs to be honed). This is an extremely sharp edge - not exactly like a real SR, but at least it will give you some idea if you are doing things right. Be careful though - I find that the shavettes are so sharp that it is easy to cut yourself. I should let you know that I have only been using a SR for several months, so take my advice with that in mind. This is a post from one beginner to another. The other guys on here know much better than I do about all things SR.

I have that exact Dovo Prima Klang 5/8 from SRD. If honed well, it should shave well. Depends on where you got yours and what you've done with it over the course of 10 shave attempts.

Thanked: 96I went for a haircut and my stylist said her son bought a straight razor from a known retailer and started to shave. Needless to say it was a disaster. She asked if I would help him and he came over with his blade. Didn't buy a strop or watch any videos. First thing was the razor wasn't sharp. Under a glass it had a bevel so I got out my Sharpton stones and honed it. Then stropped it so it would cut hair on my arm. I then gave him some pre-shave gel, mixed up some cream, showed him the angle and how to hold the razor and said shave in short strokes on your cheek only. Make sure to stretch the skin. Come back in 2 weeks. He got a modular strop and when he came back he was doing much better and started shaving his neck. He thanked me and I said, after you get the hang of refreshing, stropping and shaving, and you really enjoy this, remember the help I gave you and help someone starting out. Be a mentor! Converts welcome!
