First of all before its maiden voyage I coat my razors in renaissance wax. It leaves a clear film that protects razors from the elements.

    1. I love a nice hot razor whilst shaving so lots of hot water for me, no water near the pivot though. After use I put a tiny blob of antibac hand wash on my blade and rise off. This removes soap easily and sanitises it. I then dry with a microfiber cloth and lightly strop. I leave out to air over night and then oil with balistol before puting away.

    2. I would imagine hardness of water more likely to make a difference.

    3. Mass is perfect but not so good if you have gold wash etc.

I too like a hot razor so I rinse under running water. I try not to get near the pivot but it happens.

    I only use C O Bigelow so I don't know.

I wipe the razor with tissues, BLOW out the pivot end to remove any water left that I can't see, then linen and leather 10-20 times and leave out open to air dry.

Blue Magic to remove any stains.
Goldwash dissappears with this so be careful!

Hasstar I see you live in Florida, and down here in the south we really have to make sure our blades are dry when we're done. I grew up in a desert, and never had anything rust on me, but down here it's different. I used to just give them a quick wipe with a tissue. A year or so ago at a meet-up Utopian put one of mine under a microscope and found water drops on the bevel of a razor I had used and "dried" two days before. Since then I always strop them several strokes when I'm done, and if it's not to be used for several days I apply some oil.

    1. I rinse the blade in hot water after shaving (very carefully) then dry it on a towel. Strop it 10-20 times on linen to dry the edge.
    2. I had a soap that contained mineral salts which seemed to be worse than others. During the summer months when the algae blooms are bad, the water here gets heavily chlorinated at the treatment plant - leaves more spots with any soap.
    3. Mothers mag polish, just watch out for gold wash (found out the hard way).

+1 on using renaissance wax to protect razors. I use it on everything - razors, knives, guns, antiques. Works on wood, bone, ivory and plastic as well, but test it first because it can darken wood slightly.

I have found that the most important thing to do besides not getting it wet is don't put it away until it's been out for a while after drying, sticking it into a sock or closing it right after is wher you get those spots and patina, the blade needs fresh air to dry then put it up later or as I do , nothing cause I,m going to shave with it again the next day. I wipe the blade off after use with toilet tissue, blade, tang and scales. I make sure the pivot stays dry. I don't strop after use. Always before. After drying, my razors go into their own razor sock which I make myself from a silicon treated gunsock. No issues to report!
