Thanked: 5I don't actually count the strokes. This is a rough estimate. The reason why I stated the numbers is because every other time I have asked honing related questions I have been asked to mention how many strokes/circles I have done. I will be re-honing this blade tonight, then hopefully trying it again tomorrow morning.
As for the soaps, I have been using the same soap for the past 3 months. Never had an issue. I have a curly beard, and know that it is prone to ingrowns more than straight beards. I have accepted this, it was more a surprise cause I havent had many since I switched to a SR until I tried out this Henckel.

Thanked: 0I had the same thing happen to me as well. I change the angle I did my first pass and really made sure to stretch my skin as much as possible. It went away by doing that. I would give that a shot too especially if you just honed the razor.

Thanked: 433It might be an angle/size issue 4/8" to 6/8" razors feel like very different when I switch. Try a more shallow angle on the 6/8

Thanked: 5Thanks for all the help here gents!
I honed it again last night. Shaved with it this morning and there is still a bit of irritation, but not nearly as much! I am certain the little bit of irritation is from whatever was still there from the last shave. Not entirely certain it was the honing alone though. I also changed the angle and was significantly more careful with my pressure. But a combination of all of these suggestions has definitely helped.
Thanks!

Freddy,
Seems like you're on the right path. I got into straights for the exact same reason you did. Curly beard, ingrown hairs, irritation.
I have to really pay attention to my angle when the razor width changes 2/8, 3/8, 7/8 etc. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but it certainly makes a difference.
Also, I used an 8k to shave off of for the first few years and got to where I was quite happy with it. Then I ran across a Thuringian and by comparison the 8k felt like shaving with a serrated blade. If you've eliminated your ingrown hairs and irritation shaving off the 8k, you probably don't "need" a finisher, but you'll probably really enjoy having one once you do. When my razors need a touch up I run them on the Thuri and shave directly off of that without stropping and it's like a sweet dream.
Peace,
Jim

Thanked: 5This helps. I knew most of this stuff already. I really can't shave against the grain on my neck as my beard grows from my ears towards the center of my neck. At best I can do a XTG pass. In fact I usually only do 2 passes which are both XTG. One down, one up. Then usually need a touch up pass that is just water. On occasion I can (kind of) get an ATG pass, but this is very awkward on the neck so I just don't do it.

I have read through this thread and can share that my shaving with a single edge came about with ingrown hair issues using multiple edged contraptions.
Recently, I had a razor which would shave, yet not well. I tried and stropped and tried for 3 shaves. Back to the hones..
The results of trying to make it shave great when it would not resulted in some ingrown hair issues as I was 'short-stoking' it to get a decent shave, sort of emulating the multi-blades, as it were. Dug them out, Neosporin, shaved with the rotation, carefully.
A week later, all was well again. JME"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
