I am referring to the 1st shave as being the first shave since getting my razor professionally honed

Well these are words of wisdom that I got from fellow SR shavers. 1) Good lather helps for a good shave. 2) Shave the lather and don’t worry about the whiskers don’t apply a lot of pressure on the blade; 3) Know how your beard grows (which directions); 4) Skin stretching very important; 5) Clean your razor before your face.
    Good luck!

From personal experience there were hard soaps I have tried that at first I had a poor experience with, Mitchells Wool Fat was an example. After trying and using a ridiculous number of soaps and creams, over 30 and mostly hard soaps, there is not one that I cannot get to make a good lather for shaving including Mitchells Wool Fat. I had to learn how to make a lather with hard soaps and that they each can be a little different in how they like to be lathered. I'd be hard pressed to call any of them JUNK. Some hard soaps are just more finicky to lather than others. Yes, I have a puck of DR Harris Arlington in the rotation somewhere.

Please try to hold back the obscene language :<0)

You might want to try pre-shave oils too. Some guys love it because it helps with the slick. I think your trying to get to as little equipment as possible to get the job done and I can relate to that. You'll find what works best I am sure. It takes time and trying new things to get there. Even when you think you got the best thing going something will come along in the form of a sample or by your own experimenting and change your mind.

Glad I missed the waxing vid. I hate to see grown men scream and whimper like a girl .
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Everybody's face is different and some soaps work better on some than others, see if you can find sample sized soaps to try. You should be able to find a few right out of the box that work well for you

It's good you found something that works for you, my guess is whatever soap you use will need some help from the added oil, just because you have only been doing it for 6 months, after you really know how to make a good lather you,ll drop the added stuff, no different than finally getting around to using a shave ready razor. It shows you that you still have a lot to learn. Tc

One tip the guys here told me is to use Noxzema for pre shave, I shortened it up to a light dabbing of the brush in the Noxzema then into the bay rum for the lather up, leaves my face smooth every shave and helps stop drying out.

6 months isn't a whole heck of a lot. I've got 2 years or so under my belt now, and I ruined my last shave with bad lather. Or more accurately bad prep. I know it wasn't the razor, I just finished a touch up on my personal hones and the second pass was smooth and comfortable. I know it wasn't the soap, because I've been using the same brand for 2 years with great results. I didn't have the lather right, I was going after 2 weeks of growth (got lazy) and skipped splashing my face with water first (again - lazy), and the soap didn't penetrate to the roots so my hair wasn't wet enough. Instead of a smooth shave it tugged and pulled like I was getting after it dry - because I was. And the sad thing is I didn't realize it until the second pass - otherwise I would have stopped and fixed the problem.
